Jun 15, 2011 2:06 PM in response to Smohrmanby PhillipDuran,Sync all 20 to the single iTunes account. Keep in mind though that any time you want to add apps or do downloads you will need to enter the account login information on the iPad or do the download in iTunes and then sync the iPad.

Jun 15, 2011 2:08 PM in response to Smohrmanby Carolyn Samit,★HelpfulHow to use multiple iPods, iPads, or iPhones with one computer
Can you tell me what software to use
iTunes.
When you connect an iPad to the computer, you can give each iPad an individual name under Devices in the source list left side of the iTunes window.

Jun 15, 2011 2:50 PM in response to Smohrmanby Smohrman,So, I'm assuming you cannot use the iPhone/iPod configuration utility with an iPad?
-
Jun 16, 2011 9:50 AM in response to Smohrmanby PROV1NB,Yes you can use the iPhone configuration utility for the ipads. I have recently deployed ~60 ipads and that is how set up all the wireless, email settings, restrictions. All the ipads are tied to one itunes account for the time being.
The configuration utility made the deployment go much smoother for me, only issues that I had was with the end users putting in their passwords wrong..lol

Oct 10, 2011 5:00 AM in response to PROV1NBby AllenGoldstein,How did you sync up all 60 iPads, PROV1NB? Did you use a cart or USB hub? Datamation Systems has a 49-iPad sync and charge hub that I'm interested in checking out. I was wondering if you used someting like it for your deployment?

Oct 11, 2011 4:25 AM in response to AllenGoldsteinby PROV1NB,Well for about half of them, I had to do invidually and put out a configuration file. Now, since we have purchased managment software and also, Lion server has the same management software (or very similar) already built in.
For the other 30, I have a charging/USB cart and did the practically the same with those, configuration file. All the cart does is save time plugging the ipads into your laptop, still need to configure each one at a time.
Let me know if you have any othe questions, try to answer any that you might have.

Oct 11, 2011 7:47 AM in response to PROV1NBby Bonesaw1962,Just a quick question PROV1NB, how do you deal with the individual users and their ability to say, buy music or apps with the iTunes account...are they given the password, or is that kept private for use by IT only?
-
Oct 11, 2011 8:51 AM in response to Bonesaw1962by PROV1NB,Half of the users are students, and they have no rights to add apps at this time, with the other users, they are free to add what they feel appropriate. They all have their own individual accounts and purchase their own apps.

Dec 12, 2011 3:06 PM in response to Smohrmanby markcharge,There is a suite of software called Casper, which is made by JAMF. We've just deployed it at our school (920+ iPads) and it is fantastic. Well worth a look.

Jan 5, 2012 5:31 AM in response to PROV1NBby ThrustinJ,Have you run into any issues with large amounts of back up data from each iPad on a single computer. We've noticed that 75 devices syncing on one computer can eat up a 160GB hard drive with their back up data very quickly. I've posted another thread about this, but was browsing around as well.

Feb 24, 2012 8:10 AM in response to AllenGoldsteinby A_Randall,We use exactly that device, a 49-port USB sync hub. What's even better is that we can bring it around from room-to-room, which saved us money on not prviding syncing in each room. We got it from a company in New Jersey. I also think it is available on Amazon, under "Datamation 49 port".
The same company has a lot of other accessories to help with large scale deployments.

Feb 24, 2012 8:19 AM in response to Smohrmanby A_Randall,Has anyone run into issues or limitations on wireless syncing in school environments? I heard there were some problems in New York City schools. We are using wired syncing to make sure we can control everything and we do not have a very robust wireless network in our schools.
-
Feb 24, 2012 10:04 AM in response to A_Randallby ManesM,Schools are not ready for wireless iPad syncing, nor will they be any time soon. Wireless syncing is fine for personal use at home but it's just not feasible for syncing up a large number of iPads on a standard, or moderately robust network. The syncing times are also much faster in wired syncing.
