Q: previous shutdown cause:5

What do the following log messages mean?

6/15/11 9:58:19 AM    kernel    Previous Shutdown Cause: 5

and

6/19/11 3:24:32 PM    kernel    Previous Shutdown Cause: 0

I suspect one of these messages is related to spontaneous shutdown of the machine.

5 is a shutdown from the menu. Not completely certain, and can't find exactly what it means, but I think the 0 is normal as well. Apple doesn't publish what these codes mean.

Could be overheating or a power supply issue. For the overheating, get iStat Pro and post the temps when you've been running a while. Also, post the fan rpms.

Do the shutdowns happen when you are doing anything in particular? Something CPU or graphics intensive like gaming?

You might try running the Hardware Test in Extended.

On the iMac7,1, a shutdown cause of "0" means either that power was disconnected, or you last booted from a different device.  "5" is a normal shutdown.

These are both normal shutdown codes.  You can create a 0 by pulling the power cord, and you can create a 5 by shutting down normally.
