Easiest workaround is to use File/Import/Folders as Projects.
This seems to be a persistant bug that can be, if I remember rightly, be overcome by thrashing the .plist preference file. Know that this brings you back to square one if you have tweaked the Aperterature preferences.

Must have gone passed the time allowed to edit window but that has to be the worst spelling of Aperture ever!
