It is called "sync" for the reason it not called a transfer. It wants and is designed to "sync" make each other match. If it deleted all on the phone it is because you just had zero contacts in the address book on the computer (which on first sync is considered master copy). If you put one dummy contact into address book on computer then try to sync it will see it needs to "merge" to get the sync process coordinated.

So, let me understand if I'm doing this right:
All contacts are on iPhone
None on Address Book
Sync will erase iPhone
All conacts are on iPhone
1 dummy contact in Address Book
Sync will copy iphone contacts to Address Book.
Am I right?

You'll get a "Merge" or "Replace" prompt, select "Merge".

Correct. After they merge you can then remove that dummy contact and sync again if you want to get it off phone. Or just delete off phone and on next sync will remove from computer.

When you say Address Book I assume you are using a Mac.
Create a new user account, plug in the phone, check sync contacts with Address Book and it will give you the option to merge.
After you sucessfully get them into Address Book I suggest making a back up File > Export > Address Book Archive. You can then move the archive file to the original account, and populate that Address Book and set the phone to sync with it.

My iphone 4gs - iTunes address book merging of contacts fails to bring in most of the new entered contacts abt 1000 or so on the iphone.
I hve tried syncing on its original home macbook; no new contacts added to previous address book contacts, but still says sync complete. ok to disconnect.

I have a similar difficulty when trying to sync my iphone contacts with the address book of my imac. It appears that only the 'All from My Mac' contacts get synchronized. However, the Gmail contacts do not get synchronized. Can anyone help me how I can transfer or sync ALL of my contacts stored on my iphone with my address book on my mac?
The majority of my contacts are on the iphone under the entry Gmail contacts, my contacts on my mac in the address book app are only a few and can be erased if needed.
Thanks a lot. Your help is appreciated!

I have a similar problem which should be easily fixed with the steps described but those are not working. I just got a iPhone 4GS and im trying to take the contacts off of my 3GS and onto my adress book so I can sync the 4GS with adress book and get all my contacts. I created the "dummy contact" on adress book and have tried to sync my phone a couple of times but it doesnt work. it just syncs the dummy contact onto my 3gs but doesnt transfer the contacts from my 3gs onto the adress book on the computer. it also doesnt give me the option to "merge". the kicker to this is that at the bottom of the "sync contacts with adress book tab" on itunes it tells me that my contacts are "being synced with mobileme over the air" when mobileme DOESNT EVEN EXIST ANYMORE.... help please! thank you

I do appreciate the input for this question about how to sinc from iphone to address book, I have tried several times to do this and it won't transfer. I created a contact in address book and turned sync on in itunes and it won't sync from phone to address.
