If it is an older MacBook there is a chance the battery is dying and can no longer hold a charge. Your best bet is to get a new battery for the laptop, there is a temporary solution to help your battery life that I saw on YouTube a while ago, it might work:

thanks for the reply! the battery is a replacement that i got about 3 months ago and was holding a full charge as of 2 days ago, so i'm not sure it's the battery (and when i push the button on the battery, all the lights light up). that's why i'm thinking it's something else. thanks for the info, though! b.

If you think that it's something else you should run the hardware test.
