Q: iTunes Freezes when ipod is connected

When I connect my ipod to my computer my iTunes freezes up. I just recently restored my ipod so I lost all of my songs and now I can't reload them onto my ipod. My ipod continutally says "Do Not Disconnect" but my iTunes is frozen. Any thoughts? I've reset my ipod and I also restarted the computer. If I wait for a long time my iTunes says it found a corrupt ipod and it needs restored, even though I have done that a few times. It's frustrating so any help would be appreciated.

    Ditto!!!    Most current iTunes app freezes on my Windows 7 x64 system when plugging in the iPad 2.

    My iPod Nano has been freezing up for months, but only the first time I try to sync it.  To get past this, I just unplug my ipod (it doesn't corrupt files, so it must not really be syncing), and then force the iTunes program to close.  Then I try syncing again, and it works.  In my case, it has nothing to do with a large number of songs, as I don't have that many.  I am on Windows 7, and I am syncing an iPod Nano 6th generation, and I use Nike+.  Not sure if the Nike+ thing has anything to do with it, since it doesn't freeze when I try to sync my iPad.  Either way, this is a pain and should not happen.

    I realised why this was happening for me. The apple service Bonjour was stopped so it caused itunes to freeze when I connected my iPod touch.

    For Windows 7:

    Go to start menu

    -> Control Panel

    -> Administrative Tools

    -> Services

    -> Bonjour

    -> Right click and open properties

    -> Select Automatic from the drop down menu

    -> Start the service.

    This fixed my issue, so I hope it helps.

    I checked the services as you suggested, and Bonjour is already set to 'Automatic' and the status is 'Started'.  Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be the solution to my problem.  Thank you for the idea though.

    I've been having this same problem when connecting iPod to computer, that iTunes freezes. I also checked to see if Bonjour was set to "Automatic" and it was also "Started". So I decided to try and Stop the service, and it worked. I Can now plug in my iPod without iTunes freezing.

    I received a notification of a new release of iTunes (version 10.3.1.55) and since I updated to that version, the issues hasn't happened.

    I believe that I've found a solution.

    Left Click the "Itunes" shortcut.

    Click Properties.

    Click Compatibility.

    Chances are, In the "Compatibility mode" section, nothing is checked.

    Click the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" box and in the scroll-down menu, click "Windows 7"

    Now, start up itunes and plug in your ipod. I had a 2 second freeze, then all was well.

    I hope this works for all of you. It worked well for me.

    This did it for me! I have windows 7 64bit Ultimate. Hmm, I wonder if it's the 64bit that's locking it up?  Thanks

    Worked for me! Thanks!

    I read Apples FAQ Database page where they try to help you stop the freezing problem. Anyway, after follow all the tips listed I didn't make any progress. So that's when I decided to start disabling groups of services in MSConfig (MSConfig.exe). After many many restarts I finally found the culprit (I believe).

    • Background Intelligent Transfer Service

    After I disabled this service, connecting my iPhone works almost every time. It still freezes once in a while, but it works by far the majority of the time. I'm not sure if this is a fix or just a work-a-round since it doesn't totally fix it, but hopefully this helps some people.

    Please respond and inform me if this works for others.

    Hey Guys,

    Totally experiencing the same issues. I recently went out and bought myself a new laptop. Running Windows 7 home premium 6.1. Now, upon installing iTunes (10.3.55) , I tried to sync some of the new songs onto my iPod (4th Generation Nano w/ the newest software updates). At first, My iTunes would start syncing the songs to my iPod & freeze iTunes completely. It froze up so bad that I couldn't even force close the task in task manager. So, I un-installed iTunes & quicktime hoping to fix the problem. After re-installing the same version of iTunes, I tried again to sync a song to my iPod and it worked for 1 song then unfortunatly froze again. Now everytime I even plug my iPod in, iTunes freeze's completly. The only way to get iTunes working again is to disconnect my iPod.

    Now, I've tried all the tips posted in this thread, every single one and none have worked. One thing I haven't tried it switching the compatability mode to "windows 7", only because when I went into iTunes > Properties > Compatability, I don't have a Windows 7 option in the drop menu. Still, iTunes continues to freeze.

    If somebody could list anymore possible solutions for me to try, I'd greatly appreciate it.

    Cheers, d.

    My experience is slightly different but may help.  Basically my iTunes would crash as soon as I would go to the iTune Store.  After right clicking on the itune program icon, properties, compatiblity and then enabling the "Turn off advance text service for this program" my issue was resolved, so may be worth a shot if you haven't tried this yet.

    Good Luck.

    Hey there,

    So I tried to do what you said but when I opened up Properties > Compatibility, there was no option to "Turn off advance text service for this program" unfortunatly. Thank you for the responce though.

    Have any of you tried plugging your usb cable into the back of the computer where the motherboard's usb input is? I seem to be only getting this freezing problem when I'm plugging my cable in through the front panel. So is plugging in through the back a possible solution?

    I do in fact use the ports in the front.  So, per your suggestion, I took Itunes out of Windows 7 compatibility mode, which was the fix that worked for me, and then plugged my iphone to a back USB port.  It still froze.

    I put it back into Windows 7 compatibility mode, and it works again.

    For those that said they don't have a Windows 7 compatibility mode I just tried "Windows Vista" compatibility mode and that also works.  I 'think' this problem happens on  64 bit versions of windows 7.

    Am I the only one that actually uses Windows XP up in here?

    Same exact thing is happening to me right now and I have no clue how to fix it. If anyone has XP and fixed this problem somehow, I would love to know how. iTunes has been a pain lately.
