Q: 24" LED Display with 2011 15" MPB

Hey all,

I've had this 24" LED Cinema Display since it came out and have been using it with a 2010 MBP until now - I upgraded to a 2011 15" MPD (2.3 Core i7 with high-rest matte display) and now with this new MPD, I intermittently get the 24" LED display turning all black before going back to showing my display. It's happening pretty often. Is anyone else experiencing anything similar?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

A couple of months ago I planned to update my MBP and replace it by a MBA so I have less stuf to carry.

Yesterday I suddenly realized that I might get into more problems if the new MBA also has a TB port and has the same GPU problem as my iMac. When using a beamer the presenation will probably go south due to the flickering and black outs.

Been having theese problems since the day I purchased my MacBook Pro 15". As many others I went from the previous MacBook Pro 13" without lousybolt.

Been calling the Swedish Apple support a couple of times and today they had me run a standard software program, gathering system information. (Yes you know it, I know it, just to get rid of me hehe)

I know It's not my windscreen getting black but as a professional user It's quite "dangerous" when minimizing windows, all of a sudden you exit that important program or cutting video in the wrong place or having a video conference with your largest client and the graphics hangs completely.

What really drives me crazy is the answers I'm getting from Apple. "We know It's a problem, keep calling us and keep posting the forums maybe they will work harder" Come on, how serious is this?

Unfortunately I bought the Cinema display in a Apple reseller store so I can't just wander in and return the **** screen (or computer) since this is a minor fault in their eyes.

How can we, by legal rights fix this problem? Who knows, maybe we have to wait months or even longer...

Thunderbolt, what iiiis iit gooood for absolutely nothing...

A couple of days ago I received my replacement 27" ACD. The blackouts and flickering was annoying and made my new MBP 15" unusable when connected to my 24" ACD. As I have written earlier, I have been in dialogue with a senior Apple supporter for some time, running the diagnostic programs, sending videos, which many of you also have been through.

In the end I gave them an "ultimatum": Either they replaced my 24" ACD, which was under AppleCare or I would have to return my brand new MBP15 (here in Denmark the first six months after purchase the supplier has to prove that there was nothing wrong with the product a purchase time, - it's not the customer who has to prove the opposite). I dont know if that did it, but a couple of days later, the representative called me, and offered me a replacement - pickup at the front door - at no charge.

I have not experienced any issues with the (huge) 27" ACD yet.

Good luck to all of you. (Come on, Apple, admit there is a problem!)

Don't even bother wasting time and gas to drive to the store.  They won't be able to help you except to say, "Wait for the firmware fix which is around the corner."  I heard the same party line several times last 2 months.  I've heard it yet again from an Apple rep and I expressed my frustration.  After paying $thousands in equipment I expected things to work.

Just got back from my local Apple store (Northridge, CA).  I was there purchasing my ACD Apple Care Plan.  Had to since my year warranty expired this coming Friday.  I had, what turned out to be a very brief conversation, with the rep who helped me.  I explained the problem and like many of you have mentioned, he just nodded his head with a slight look of surprise and said no he had not heard of the issues.  He then quickly redirected our conversation and ended the sales transaction (I had already paid).  I have to mention that I was a bit taken by the lack of support and help/interest in my problem that I brought to him.  I know this could have very well been the particular person but this is not how I know Apple and it's employees to be.

As I posted a week ago, I too have the flickering and thought that maybe it was due to my power cord connection showing no light indicator.  I did closely monitor this and much to my disappointment, it still continued to happen (the flickering/blacking out) even if the light indicator was on.  So all in all....it is still a problem but thankfully does not happen w/ as much frequency as some are reporting in this thread.  I will be calling Apple and dealing them to try to get a fix.  Hopefully a firmware update or even better a new ACD, but I won't hold my breath for that one.

The employee probably knew about the issue very well and simply changed the subject on you to avoid discussing the problem that has no solution.  I am more surprised by the lack of interest/opinions from major technology related sites like Macworld, CNET, etc.  I haven't seen any blog/articles from them.

I am also stuck with flickering 24 inch display with a Macbook Pro 15 inch.

If you expect the latest Thunderbolt firmware update to solve this issue, then I'm sad to report that it doesn't solve it at all! Still same symptoms (black outs, flickering, image quickly shifting left...).

In fact there seems to be a better, after some minutes (5-10 minutes) of crazy flickering, it stabilized and don't flickers anymore (more than 15 minutes with flickering). Hope this will be confirmed in the long term....

This is bizarre... I installed the Firmware update two hours ago and since then... not a flicker.

    I have a 2011 17" MacBook Pro and a 2009 24" Apple Cinema Display.

    I can't decide if:

    • My eyes have become so accustomed to the dreadful flickering that I simply don't notice it any more
    • By chance no flicker has occurred for the last two hours (unlikely, as it was almost constant before)
    • The firmware update has solved the problem (unlikely, as this is not borne out by the posts before mine)

I'm going for option 1. I'll update in a while....

Interesting - my flickering has been quite in-frequent - I can happily go for a couple of hours without anything, then 3-4 in a much shorter time...

So perhaps there's more than one problem here, and Apple's helped one of them? or just improved it for the worst flickerers?

Like I said, my flickering is irritating, but doesn't stop me work effectively - perhaps we need a straw poll on how bad people's flickering/black screening is?

When I tried my MBP at the apple store, their display was flickering *way* worse than mine, so there are differences in degree

Aaaaaagh I spoke too soon, the flickering is back.

Nice one Apple, we wait months for a firmware update, and after all that, it does NOTHING to address the problem.

Yes, stills same problem after Thunderbolt update...

Silly thing is that the whole point with Apple is that they control both the hardware and software... hence the reason for buying Apple instead of a PC is that these sort of things shouldn't happen...

I think everyone should get on the phone again... overload them with complaints so they get their act together. Maybe also email gadget sites to get the issue noticed...

Same result for me, black screen and flickering again after applying the update.

Grrrrrrrr....I wonder what are they doing in their labs.

Perhaps we should post something on macworld and CNET forum.
