Q: Moving Forward with FCSvr

OK, all of us who have spent lots of time, money and sweat have had our (not so) little tantrums about FCSvr and FCP going away sometime in the future. Now let's discuss what we are going to do about it and the timeline. What would be an optimal configuration with both products to go forward to get maximum years of service out of both products? As system software moves forward it seems to eclipse older versions of apps, making upgrades necessary, so planning on getting the last best equipment and system that will run these apps successfully into the future would be the goal. I am thinking I should start upgrading my 3 iMac edit stations when Lion arrives and have Thunderbolt option and the fastest processor to run FCP7 as long as possible, but maybe I'd be better off with towers for more modification possibilities. I currently serve from an older Mac Pro Intel tower, thinking I should upgrade that to an XSAN before that disappears? Thoughts everyone?

We have enough Xserves(discontinued) and Xserve RAIDS (discontinued) to last quite awhile to run Final Cut Server (discontinued) in our shop.  You will be able to find parts for whatever for awhile and even run FCS on

    a hackintosh if you want.

The software itself is very powerful and will continue to be so for some time, and even longer with some planning.

Just use carbon copy cloner to make masters of the systems you use and shelve several copies just in case.

I would not bank on Lion working well with FCP 7 or anything professional at this point given Apple's track record. They have made it clear (especially with the FCPX FAQ) that they are going to do things their way whether it breaks our way of working or not.

I would definitely not look at rolling out an expenive Apple SAN product could also be EOL by 2012.
