Q: 24" LED Display with 2011 15" MPB

Hey all,

I've had this 24" LED Cinema Display since it came out and have been using it with a 2010 MBP until now - I upgraded to a 2011 15" MPD (2.3 Core i7 with high-rest matte display) and now with this new MPD, I intermittently get the 24" LED display turning all black before going back to showing my display. It's happening pretty often. Is anyone else experiencing anything similar?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

If anything, this actually seems to have made it worse for me... each blackout also seems to last for a longer duration...

I agree with one of the previous posters who said...for those that still have the flickering/blackout problem after the firmware update, call Apple and let them know the update DIDN'T fix the problem. WTH...they've certainly captured enough machines/monitors to properly test a fix - one would think.

I confirm that for me it did improve my experience. It's not perfect yet, and in fact it's flickering like before for about 15-30 minutes before being usable, but after that period of time, it stabilize and stop flickering (or may flicker very rarely (didn't notice it yet)).

Even if it's better, that is not enough for me to consider it acceptable, and I'm still expecting a real fix (no flicker at all, not even the first 15-30 mins). So Apple don't stop here, you still have to perfect the fix so that it can really be considered as a fix.

I was told by an Apple customer rep yesterday that the engineers are close to the solution and will be releasing an update in next 2 weeks or so.  My guess is this new Thunderbolt update released wasn't meant to address the 24 inch display flickering issue.

I have to admit I was exasperated and told them so.  The rep said he can't exchange my 24 inch display for a new 27 inch display.  Instead he offered $100 Apple online store credit if I spent more than $300 in merchandise.  Can you believe it??  Instead of offering unconditional credit they attached condition/limitation.

Folks, you need to post your complaint not just on this board but also post it on Macworld.com and CNET.com and let them know about Apple's dismal customer service.  Apple will continue to drag its feet if this issue didn't receive wider coverage.  Simply post it on today's articles on Thunderbolt update.

Funny cause I emailed Brian Tong from CNet's The Apple Byte.  Not that he will do anything but maybe just alert him to this thread and he can throw out a "Bad Apple."   You never know.

    @ucruci

I'd not be surprised to have a screen firmware update soon to complete the Thunderbolt firmware update. For me the Thunderbolt firmware update is clearly part of the fix, as it did improve the experience in my case (and in fact fix the flickering after the first 15-30 mins, no flicker yet in more than 1 hour since last flicker).

But the Thunderbolt firmware is not enough alone, clearly (that's not normal that I've to wait for 15-30 mins to have the picture getting stable and flicker free), and that's why I wouldn't be surprised to have a complementary screen firmware update or driver software update.

The thunderbolt firmware update of 6/28/11 did not improve my 24" display's flickering problem.

Apple support indicated that (1) it's a display problem, not a 2011 MBP or Thunderbolt problem and (2) a software fix is coming soon.  Based on the comments in this thread, the length of time that many users have been dealing with the problem, and my disappointment in Apple's handling of this.  I'm returning both the 2011 MBP and the 24" display for a refund.  Best of luck to all and thanks for the advice.

This is an update from my June 18th post.

My 24" ACD as been in repair at my local Apple Store (Montreal) for the past two weeks. An Apple technician just gave me a call today to let me know he has changed the LOGIC BOARD of the display. He has been running some tests with it for the last couple of hours and tells me he hasn't seen any flickering or blacking out of the screen so far. The ACD is connected to a MacBook Pro 13" thru its Thunderbolt port, as a screen extension. I guess for now I have to take is word for it...

I have asked the technician if the LOGIC BOARD he replaced was of the same model and brand as the new one. He said he wasn't sure... Anyway, the screen has been put back together and I guess we will have to see.

As soon as I pick the display and run my own tests on it I will keep you guys posted on the results.

    FM

P.S. I still believe if you experience issues with the 24 ACD, writing and calling Apple is (unfortunately) not sufficient. Bring the display to the Apple Store! Let them have it physically right in there face and sort out whatever needs to be sorted out. It's harder to turn down a irate customer with the faulty display at the Store in front of other customer than it is to make up a story and hang-up the phone. At least that's my take on it ;-)

Has anyone had a good experience switching to a non-Apple display with a 2001 MBP?  If so, which ones and under what type of usage? For example, I need to read lots of text all day long, not to concerned with photos or video.

Still black screens here, got it right after the update and continuing today. Since my problems occur randomly I cannot tell if It's less or more. I'll post here if I notice either of it, however if this was the actual firmware-fix I'm not so sure they will ever solve it.

I had to wait 2-3 days before the technicians would return feedback from my data I sent in so I'll probably wait with the call until thursday.

    Update

Hmm a little to quick perhaps... the graphics just freezed on me with a mishmash of windows so I had to unplug the cable. In my days with PC and this type of graphics distortion there was 9 out ot 10 a busted graphics card. Maybe Thunderbolt is not the issue here...

Yesterday I had high hopes the issue was solved with the update. The ACD seemed to have stopped flickering.

Today the flickering and black outs return.

So I installed the Mac OS X 10.6.8 and the Thunderbolt update.  I see the usual black flickers for first few minutes then the display seems to stabilize.  I was able to use the display without any interruptions after that for few hours.  Let's see what happens tonight it might come back.  I still think Apple needs to release one more firmware/driver update to cure this bug.  I see that others are having more severe problems even after downlading the latest updates.

I am still frustrated that Apple let this bug out the door when the Thunderbolt was released earlier this year.  It's QA Testing 101 to conduct regression testing on your existing products (including the discontinued products as long as they are used by customers) when new technology is released.  I sometimes wonder if Apple knew about the problem but decided to release the Thunderbolt anyway, figuring they had more to gain at the expense of 24 inch ACD  display owners suffering through problems.

Those of us who own the ACD 24 inch display became unwilling QA testers for Apple, providing data to their engineers after shelling out thousands of dollars to buy the Macbook Pro 2011 and the display.

Apple clearly owes public apology and compensation (i. e. gift card, etc.) for our inconvenience, lost time and productivity.  Apple markets its products as premium brand with higher standard with its mantra "It just works" so many of us have also higher expectations when it comes to service.

I think I just got a new Thunderbolt firmware update over Apple's Software Updater. 94kb. Can anyone confirm that or am I hallucinating? No flickering since then... well, it's only been 20 minutes so far

    *edit*

Yes, definitely a new one: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2200708/Bilder/software-update.jpg

Nothing new here yet on software update (15" MacBook Pro 2011). That's strange that your second update has the exact same version number (1.0)...
