Q: 24" LED Display with 2011 15" MPB

Hey all,

I've had this 24" LED Cinema Display since it came out and have been using it with a 2010 MBP until now - I upgraded to a 2011 15" MPD (2.3 Core i7 with high-rest matte display) and now with this new MPD, I intermittently get the 24" LED display turning all black before going back to showing my display. It's happening pretty often. Is anyone else experiencing anything similar?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.6)

Yep, little bit weird. But still no flickering on my Cinema Display at home for hours. Tomorrow I'm going to see if it works on my CD at work, too.

It has been a flicker free day for me.  Hope I didn't speak too soon.

Unfortunitly not for me.  Both ACD's are still flickering and have been unchanged by the thunderbolt update.  I have a sneaking feeling that the thunderbolt update was for the newly released thunderbolt devices released this week.  Just my 2¢.  I'll be going back to my apple store and having them wait with the computer and display until the flickering returns.   I'll post results.

Here is a link to a video showing my display flickering and eventually shutting off.  Is this similar to anyone's experience?

@road2ca - WOW that is bad.  I feel very fortunate mine is very very minor compared to yours.  I sure hope Apple finds a fix soon.

    Thanks for sharing.

It appears you experience blackouts mainly. With me the blackouts were alternating with rapid horizontal shifts. But it happened with about the same frequency as your problems, and yes in the end total darkness.

    @road2c

It seems we all experience the same kind of problems. I am under the impression some experience the black outs more then others and vice verse for the flickering.

Just when I started to type this message I see that my screen kind of freezes. The windows that are open are broken up into square blocks like a puzzle. Tweetdeck still updates so it is not a real freeze.

Still same here, got a few blackouts with no pattern in time and just now i got the freeze thing allover again with the need to unplug/plugin.

Have been updating with both versions of Thunderbolt firmware. I'm calling Apple later, they have now sent out the much talked about firmware(s) and it didn't solve anything, at least not here. (MBP15 24 CD)

Still same here. (MBP 15 2011 + ACD 24). I still have the same problem since 28.03.2011!!!!! I hope, no one will buy the new MBA/MB anything else with the thunderbolt to connect with a 24" ACD. Wait! Stop!

    What can we do?

UPDATE from June 29.  I thought Apple is finally close to solving the problem after downloading the 10.6.8 update and the Thunderbolt update.  For a while the flicker went away and the total blackout disappeared.

Well, I spoke too soon.  All the problems (flickering, screen tiling with static, total blackout, etc.) came back on the 2nd day.  Once again my 24 inch ACD is almost useless.

I am SICK OF THIS.  AFTER PAYING $3000+ for the Macbook Pro 2011 and the display I have unusable product on my hand.

I upgraded to the latest Thunderbold firmware. My 24 inch ACD went black twice last evening. It's connected to my 2011 13 inch MBP. Apparently, the firmware upgrade did not resolve the issues. I called Apple Care several times. They were friendly enough but pretty much totally worthless. So was the Apple Genius at the Apple Store. He looked at me like I am some Alien from another planet. How can he not have heard about the display/mbp issues? Did he live in a cave or under a rock? In my opinion, Apple is in denial that there is a problem. They need to make things right now!

Here is my question....has anyone actually taken in their display and MB's in to their local Apple store and the "Genius" Bar?  It seems like a lot of valid complaining (it's happening to me too) but haven't read of anyone actually taking their set up into Apple.  Anyone????

I have an appointment at my local Apple Authorized Retailer which is a Mac only store.  I am taking in both my ACD and MBP to set it up for them so they can see for themselves.

I did. They ran a hardware test. it came back clear. Basically, they weren't able to recreate the issue. They made me look like a fool and liar. I sent an email to Macworld's editorial staff asking them to run a story on this issue. Maybe this will work.

Just for you Lexus Luthor ;-) Two of my earlier posts.

    -----

I've been using my 24 ACD for the past 8 months with a MacBook Pro 13" (summer 2010, non-Thunderbolt) and it was working like a charm.

I've received my brand new iMac 21.5 (2.8 i7, 8 Gb RAM - with Thunderbolt) yesterday. Plugged in the 24 ACD and, what do you know... flickering and blacking out like there is no tomorrow. Thanks to this forum, I've learned I wasn't the only one experiencing this very annoying (I'm being polite here...) situation.

Called the Apple Support. Went through a series of procedures while being directed over the phone by the Apple technician: reseting the PRAM, downloading the latest updates, booting from OS X disk, all the good stuff... Still no luck.

An appointment was setup with a Genius at my local Apple Store (Montreal, Canada) in order to check the video card of the computer and to test it with the newer 27" ACD. Which I did. Still no luck. The computer was tested and everything seems to be fine at that end of the tunnel.

Next step, I was told to bring the 24 ACD in so a technician could have a look at it. Which I also did. The folks at the Apple Store are going to change the cables and the video card of the display. They admitted there is a problem with the 24 ACD's and the new Thunderbolt port. At least someone had the guts to say it...

I'm waiting for the process to be completed (a week to 10 days) and I will keep you guys updated on the 24 ACD Saga.

    ---------

This is an update from my June 18th post.

My 24" ACD as been in repair at my local Apple Store (Montreal) for the past two weeks. An Apple technician just gave me a call today to let me know he has changed the LOGIC BOARD of the display. He has been running some tests with it for the last couple of hours and tells me he hasn't seen any flickering or blacking out of the screen so far. The ACD is connected to a MacBook Pro 13" thru its Thunderbolt port, as a screen extension. I guess for now I have to take is word for it...

I have asked the technician if the LOGIC BOARD he replaced was of the same model and brand as the new one. He said he wasn't sure... Anyway, the screen has been put back together and I guess we will have to see.

As soon as I pick the display and run my own tests on it I will keep you guys posted on the results.

P.S. I still believe if you experience issues with the 24 ACD, writing and calling Apple is (unfortunately) not sufficient. Bring the display to the Apple Store! Let them have it physically right in there face and sort out whatever needs to be sorted out. It's harder to turn down a irate customer with the faulty display at the Store in front of other customer than it is to make up a story and hang-up the phone. At least that's my take on it ;-)

I did as well, they told me a firmware fix was on its way, but that was in early May when I first got my MBP.  They said the display was perfect... right...
