May 4, 2011 12:38 PM in response to pjensen4by richardfromwarren,Mine quit working months ago. It doesn't accept or eject discs, all it does is make this horrible grinding noise. I, for one, am very convinced it's a software issue and I'm VERY disappointed in Apple for ignoring it.

May 8, 2011 9:06 PM in response to pjensen4by valskppr,I have the same problem. Please add me to the list. The CD drive wouldn't read a brand new CD, which I just unwrapped. Unbelievably frustrating.
Trip to the Apple store pending...

May 20, 2011 8:52 PM in response to valskpprby zakmccracken,I got an iMac like two or three months ago. I still see it as "brand new" and "I just got it" even though there's a newer line of iMacs out.
Now my iMac won't read discs anymore either. I'm not sure when it stopped working, because it was working in the beginning AFAIK, because I remember I did use some DVDs with it (Snow leopard etc), but then again I didn't use the drive much and it was left alone for most of the time these months. Now when I tried to insert a audio CD, it just pops it out after 10-20 seconds. Trying another audio CD, DVD movie or a burned DVD does the same thing - it pops it out after making some sounds and a 10-20 seconds.
I'm wondering where I should start with this... I got the iMac at a retailer (not Apple store). Of course, if the drive had BR capabilities that would be super. Maybe I should just find a new external drive. BUT I would expect the things that I payed for to work. Especially since there's just been 2-3 months and the warranty should be fine.

Jun 30, 2011 11:44 AM in response to pjensen4by Forestengineer,My iMac does not work either tried the options as I read every single posting to date in this discussion. I am disappointed that Apple has not stepped up to the plate to own this situation, they are taking the Microsoft stance and dumping the expense on the costumer. I have most apple items and have been involved with many purchases of apple products as I advertised apple as more reliable and dependable than Microsoft products/PC's... This situation has me a little embarrassed that I walked into the stores with these other individuals to pick the "best" machine that would serve them well.
So I sit here before my partially functioning machine and ask myself was it worth it and what will be my next replacement, my brand loyalty stays with dependability not a corporate entity, like a tool on a workers bench that does not work it gets tossed...now this tool(iMac) sits on my desk it's costing me time and money.
Respectable thing to do is a recall... Auto industry does it...so can Apple.

Jul 9, 2011 11:45 PM in response to pjensen4by jipsi,Okay, I'm so po'd it's not funny anymore... May 2005 I purchased a bells-and-whistles Imac from an area authorized seller of Apple computers, paid over $2000 for what WAS a $3000 custom state-of-the-art build based on a 20" G5 iMac (1.8mhz) someone else failed to pick up and pay for, so the dealer sold it to me for a nice discount. I was happy, for a couple months. It ended up being a LEMON, with the hard drive being replaced twice and several other major bombs the Apple tech had to come and take care of, SEVERAL TIMES EACH, withh a total of five visits and repairs in a period of three years (the latest happened just two weeks before my Apple Care warranty expired!). Long story short, they admitted, finally, that it was a bad system, and replaced it with the only thing they could, at that time, 3 years later, an aluminum finish Apple iMac Intel Core 2 Duo. It's been better than the first, but just about 1 year ago, I started having problems with the DVD drive (Matshita DVD-R UJ-875 superdrive) ejecting discs almost as soon as they were slotted in. SINCE I had just the week before changed my burner software, I spent several months procrastinating the software's removal (and refund of), before discovering this past SPring, that there was no change. SO I went online here to Apple's site, saw what it said about the discs, and purchased expensive brand name discs instead of the cheaper ones I'd used (with no problem for the first 2 of the past 3 years!). No dice. It won't even accept my music CD's anymore! It pauses on *some* discs, giving me hope, but then makes a loud gnashing noise like it doesn't like the TASTE of the disc before spitting it out. Further, when I do a diagnostic, it says 'nothings' wrong'. My system profile shows the drive is there. And it shows the drive is 'working'. But IT DOESN'T WORK. To make matters doubly worse, Ive spent the last 8 months screwing around with it, trying to figure out what *I* was doing wrong, and now I find out, YESTERDAY, that my most recent AppleCare warranty expired on me just last month!!! Now, I was ready to say, 'oh well, que sera sera', but when I did more sleuthing, trying to find someone with a parted out imac I could buy their DVD drive to replace this one with, that this very same issue is a BIG ISSUE, that unequivocably sounds more like a RECALL ISSUE than a random problem I should have to deal with on my own.... What can we do? Will Apple respect this issue as THEIRS, and replace our scrummy DVD drives? Or are they playing dumb and la-la-lal-la-la-la-ing in hopes we - and this damnable defective-parts problem - will simply go away??? I really wasn't ready to call Apple and go through this all over again, especially since my AppleCare went out on me at such an opportune time. But seeing how HUGE and widespread this problem is (and dang, it doesn't look like I'm going to find a WORKING 'replacement' DVD-R drive from the same model iMac anywhere, since they ALL seem to be defective!) I'm ready to make some noise. What is - or has - anyone else learned about this, in speaking to anyone at Apple? Obviously, with over 3 years of comments and complaints here, and still being added to, it seems, SOMETHING needs to be done... WHat's crazy about this is... I can't even SPEND MONEY on new Apple software and OSX upgrades (still on frickin' Leopard!) because the danged DVD-R drive crapped out on me. SO they're LOSING MONEY even as they're trying to ignore the problem? Leaving me to... what? search for an illegal download somewhere, since I can't buy and install anything the LEGAL (and WORKING) way?
tsk tsk

Jul 27, 2011 8:57 PM in response to pjensen4by megfish,Hey Apple, I think you have a problem with your POS MATSHITADVD-R UJ-875 drives. Just saying, mine has never worked properly, and there are a few folks out there (including me) that would appreciate a little empathy from you.
Thanks!

Jul 28, 2011 12:24 AM in response to pjensen4by n3rf,I had the same problem, but I have found a fix.
It seems like the Superdrive thinks there is still a disk in it, but there is not.
To fix it, I booted into Windows, and choose "eject" for the CD/DVD drive. It made the eject sound and worked fine after that

Aug 5, 2011 9:27 PM in response to pjensen4by se7enw00d,The built-in DVD drive doesn't read any discs either and just spits them out after about 10 secs. This is so not on, Apple.

Aug 10, 2011 6:29 AM in response to n3rfby Grunkhead,This solution worked for me. I booted into Parallels 6 where the virtual iso image Parallels Tools was still loaded. After that virtual partition was ejected, I suspended Parallels, then was able to burn a DVD+R DL disc.

Aug 21, 2011 2:20 PM in response to Grunkheadby Bernie Zielinski,Similar problem here, in attempting to burn a disc using iDVD. Multiple attempts to get new Verbatim discs to load failed. However, an HP disc went in and stayed on the first attempt. Then DVD burned successfully. Is there some issue with Verbatim discs, and iMac drives?

Aug 27, 2011 4:35 PM in response to Grunkheadby Robert Meushaw,I just started having a problem reading CD's and DVD's on an old iMac Core Duo machine (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 drive). I was able to burn an audio CD on a Verbatim disc but the burned disc wouldn't play on the iMac. The disc would play on a CD player however.
I was wondering if anyone who had Parallels installed with Windows on their Mac were able to play a CD or DVD, when it wouldn't play natively on the Mac? If anyone has the CD/DVD playing problem could try it using a Windows virtual machine, that would be a useful experiment.

Aug 27, 2011 6:33 PM in response to Robert Meushawby Robert Meushaw,I just came across another post at http://muzso.hu/2008/08/17/how-to-clean-the-lens-of-a-slot-loading-optical-drive -a-macbook-pros-superdrive regarding a similar CD/DVD reading problem.
the post describes using a credit card wrapped with a cloth that is damp with alcohol (or other cleaning fluid). By inserting the credit card at the left side of the dvd opening and moving the card in and out (about an inch or so) the lens was cleaned enough to start working again. A number of other users seemed to have success with this as well.
I thought this approach might be worth trying and will report back after I have a chance to try it.
