I remembered that when I installed Lion and tried the kexts, the Lion kernel was working on 64 bits.

On 64bit mode the 10.6.2 Kexts work like a charm.
Funny thing is they should panic also in x86_64 mode, otherwise there is something *REALLY* wrong in the i386-only portion of the code. And that might even be the root cause of all this mess.
Has anybody tried to run "vanilla" 10.6.8 (ie. without the 10.6.2 kexts) in 64 bit mode?

Jun 29, 2011 10:47 PM in response to morphoby Harkaitz,I havent tried the 10.6.8 vanilla drivers on 64mode BUT some users reported that the freezes persist on lion (and its 64bit kernel+kexts) so I doubt they are "freeze free".

Jun 30, 2011 12:12 PM in response to Harkaitzby Backspin,Booting 10.6.8 in 64-bit mode with the 10.6.2 kexts works for me too. 32-bit mode crashes on boot with a kernel panic.

This forum is GREAT for helping others, when Apple doesn't want to fix this problem !

Jun 30, 2011 2:07 PM in response to nekosaurby k3bs,Could someone share the 10.6.2s ATI* from a 7,1 iMac please? I am willing to try them on my 10.6.8 / 64bit. I have tried the 8,1 that were posted earlier in this thread, but as nekosaur pointed out - you will get a kernel panic.

Jun 30, 2011 11:48 PM in response to k3bsby Harkaitz,I installed the 10.6.2 kexts on a 7.1 imac with 10.6.7 an they worked. They should work for you too.
Has the 7.1 imac the ability to boot on 64bit?

Jul 1, 2011 12:36 AM in response to Harkaitzby k3bs,You are right, i am not in 64bit mode.
I've added the flag in Boot.plist and the kernel.log showed me: "64 bit mode enabled" at the top, but from looking at Sytem Profiler/Software i can see that "64-Bit-Kernel and -Extensions" is still "NO".
So there is a chance that the kexts posted here may work on this 7,1 iMac running 10.6.8 if i only get 64bit to test it out. But maybe 64bit isnt even possible on this machine, i dont know..

Jul 1, 2011 1:53 AM in response to k3bsby k3bs,Just found out: 7,1 can not be boot in 64bit, never ever
Downgrading to 10.6.7 and applying the 10.6.2 kexts seems to be the only option. Haven't tried, but i will now.
Since 10.6.8 is possibly the last update before Lion (and there was nothing but AppStore crap in it) i will downgrade and wait for 10.7 to be released.

Jul 1, 2011 2:06 AM in response to k3bsby Harkaitz,I´ll install Lion DP4 on my other mac (imac 7.1 with ati card). Hope to tell you something today (maybe Lion works on 64 bit on the 7.1 or it can manage the 32bit kexts of the 10.6.2).

Jul 1, 2011 2:23 AM in response to Harkaitzby Tardigrada,Thanks Harkaitz!
An easier way to switch to the 64 bit kernel is to enter this into Terminal:
sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64

Jul 1, 2011 3:18 AM in response to Harkaitzby k3bs,Thank you Harkaitz! Looking forward to hear from you!
I just booted my downgraded 10.6.7 and could successfully apply the 10.6.2 kexts. Now lets see how it goes. Finally can do some work again without being scared to freeze any moment...
For reference, here are some version numbers of ATI2600Controller.kext i came across
10.6.8 = 1.6.36
10.6.7 = 1.6.26
10.6.2 = 1.6.6

Does the iMac 7,1 have a 64 bit EFI? This way you can check in Terminal:
ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi
If the result looks like this you may have a chance using some tricks:
| | "firmware-abi" = <"EFI64">

Jul 1, 2011 5:26 AM in response to Tardigradaby k3bs,thanks for that command! yes, i have a 64bit EFI
$❯ ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi
| | "firmware-abi" = <"EFI64">
