In a document of about 70 pages and 9 sections, I consistently find I cannot access the footer in the 9th or later sections. All is ok in earlier sections. Do others have this problem? Any solution?

    DD,

Similar problems have been reported by others, but more often it's described as an inability to select text near the page bottom. This is the first time I can recall difficulty selecting the Footer. I suppose you need to enter a custom footer for each section based on your description. In general users aren't complaining about the Footer, but they may not have tried to access that portion of the layout.

My guess is that it has to do with documents that have large amounts of imported content where Pages may not have perfect information or control of the font size and/or line spacing.

Can you say more about your content's origin and nature?

Thanks Jerry for such a prompt response.

My problem is certainly one of not being able to select text in the footer. I have a different footer for each section.

My content is text from MS Word documents with about 10 png images dragged into each section from my desktop. There also are a few text boxes (about 7-8 for each section). I have limited myself to two fonts throughout the document.

I can get around the problem by completing new sections in a new Pages document, then copying them into the old document. That works fine (as long as I don't need to edit the footer!).

    David,

It's difficult to say what is going on there without being able to see the document. If you turn on Show Layout in the View menu, you may be able to tell if an object is blocking your access to the footer. Compare sections in which you have access to those where you don't.

What puzzles me is that this problem only strikes Sections well into the document - one would think a Section Break would serves as a kind of firewall to stop/reset the buildup of small positioning errors. I gather that if you Copy a misbehaving Section in the Thumbnail Pane and Paste it into the Thumbnail Pane of a blank WP Template, the problem doesn't strike. Have you tested in this way?

What fonts are you using? Did you apply them after importing the text to Pages, or are they from the original source MS Word document? One thing to try is to Paste and Match Style your copied Word content into a Pages Placeholder Text object. Even more drastic would be to first copy into Text Edit, reduce to Plain Text, then Import by Copy / Paste and Match Style into Pages.

If you can see anything unusual with Show Layout, post it here for us to examine.

You may send the document to my mailbox.

I would try to find what is wrong.

I had a similar problem last year, when I couldn't access text near the bottom of the page, once I was over 100 pages in. It was down to the fact that I had begun the book in Open Office Writer before I bought my Mac, and had saved it as Rich Text to convert it. The file became slightly corrupted.

The cure is laborious, but it works. Save the original file as plain text (ie. reduce it to a pure ascii file). Then open a new, blank Pages document and paste the plain text file into it. You will lose all your formatting, save carriage returns, and have to put it all back in, but the resultant file will be pure Pages and not corrupted.. If your formatting is complex, I would advise making a printout first so that you can see where you have to insert commands.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you David. I have spent the day 'cleaning' the text in Word by pasting it into a new file as unformatted text. I then copy the unformatted text into my Pages document with Paste and Match Style and still the problem appears after 70 pages and a few sections. Very frustrating!!!

Thank you Jerry. There is nothing blocking my access to the footer. If I paste a section from another document into the Thumbnail Pane the problem exists in that pasted section also, even though the footer worked fine in the original.

I am using Verdana and Gil Sans fonts. Nothing fancy there. They are in Styles, and I always Paste and Match Style, or apply a style to Body Style.

    A mystery indeed!

    I'm puzzled.

I created a document with 116 pages and 4 sections and was unable to reproduce your problem.

May you send the document to my mailbox ?

Thanks to all for their help but I have now solved the problem. It lay in a seemingly corrupted file.

I have been able to copy the thumbnails from the corrupted documents into new Pages documents and all works properly.

I should have thought of this sooner but at least it is resolved.

Thanks Jerry. Thanks also to David and Yvan.
