Q: will apple's usb modem work with Lion

I don't care so much about whether it will work for faxing. Well, I care a little. But mostly, I use the usb modem for communicating with a bulletin board. You probably think this must be so old-fashioned that why should Apple care. Well, I'm talking about the U.S. government. I submit claims to Medicare, Medicare requires electronic transmission, and the only way you can submit without paying a third party is through a bulletin board accessible only via a data modem. Is Apple saying that health care isn't that important? Just kidding, but what's the answer: Will the Apple USB modem work with Apple's own system?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

Apparently it doesn't work with newer hardware so it may no longer be supported even in Snow Leopard. We don't know about Lion, but odds are Apple is no longer supporting it because they no longer have it as an available product.

There are other similar types of modems, however, that do work and you can find them via Google.

No, health care is saying updating old technology isn't that important.

I already have the modem, so when you say "there are other similar types of modems that do work" I remain a bit in the dark. Are you saying that other types of modems do work with Lion? And that the Apple USB modem doesn't? Are you saying that from experience with the developer version of Lion? Or are you just guessing?

That's for sure! Medicare has been saying for years that internet submission of claims is right around the corner. I'm still holding my breath...

The Apple USB modem is driver-dependent, and is supported in 10.6. It's a long-discontinued product, so I wouldn't count on its being supported in 10.7. But other USB modems will work.

I don't know what Lion will support regarding modems. It may support the Apple modem or not. Even if I did know I would be restricted by an NDA from disclosing the information. And, we cannot speculate about the matter on the forums.

Hmmm, just another thing to make me wonder if I should upgrade to Lion.  But for whatever it's worth, I can confirm that Apple's usb modem does work with SNow Leopard because I use it to do a lot of faxing.

I can confirm that the Apple Modem does not work in Lion, but I have a cheap usb data/fax modem that I bought of ebay, and I can confirm that it does work.

There are millions of people that do jot have access to broadband that live in the plains area of MN, NB, IA, SD, ND, WS. My Apple modern won't work either and it's my only means to faxing.

It definitely worked under Snow Leopard on the same Mac Pro I was using under Snow Leopard. Lion dropped support.

The issue with the USB modem is that the drivers are 32 bit only.  The Apple USB modem won't work under Snow Leopard when it's forced to 64 bit.  Lion runs 64 bit default.  Unless you can force 32 bit it WILL NOT work.  I have not tried forcing Lion to 32 bit, so I don't know if that will even help.  If it does not help or you cannot force Lion to 32 bit, then apple usb modem users are basically screwed.

I have tried to force Lion to 32 bit mode with no success.

I'm really not happy about this.  I use my modem all the time for faxing, and had no idea Lion wouldn't have support for it.  Come on apple, write a 64-bit driver for it!!!!  I only bought it a year ago...
