You can delete clips and images by selecting them in the Event browser and selecting File->Move to Trash. The keyboard shortcut is (Command-delete). You can also right-click it and select Move to Trash. The clip and any associated files FCP X created with the same name will be moved into the MacOS Trash.

I think creating trimmed media from the existing media is a feature thats not yet made it into FCP X.
In the meantime you could export the selections you want to keep as new self contained media files (one way would be to create a compound clip of your selection, open it into the timeline, and then export a QT movie) then bring these new clips back into your project to use in place of those original selections ... when thats done and you've double checked you've not missed anything, then you can delete the original footage.
Hope it helps

Andy's right. I should have mentioned that you cannot delete parts of a clip, only the entire clip. Hence his suggestion of an elaborate workaround.

I can't believe we can't trim a original video and we have to delete the entire thing. I'm sure that a lot of people would love this feature. I restore a lot of VHS tapes to DVD and sometimes the footage is crap. I hate this taking up space on my hd. I hope this is implemented later. Was it in other versions of fcp?
