I have a simple question. How do you set an image to be the background of a Pages '09 document? How do you put a JPG image behind your regular body text? Surely it's possible, but I can't figure out how to do it.

Insert the image you want & position it, make any changes, etc.

    1) Using word procession: If you want it to repeat on all pages, go to Format > Advanced > Move Object to Section Master. If you just want it on the one page you can move the object to be a background object using the Arrange menu or the wrap inspector.

    2) Using page layout. You'll need to capture the page. I rarely use page layout, so I suggest searching the forum for 'capture.'

Take a good look in the Arrange menu

Perfect. Such a simple answer. That's exactly what I was looking for, but couldn't figure out how to do.

I had the same question. When I inserted a photo under the media tap, this worked great. But, when I copied and pasted an image into the document the "send object to background" option was greyed out. I tried saving it as an image and opening it in a new document, and even tried another clip art, but it will never give me the option to send to background. What am I doing wrong?

You just didn't took care to the status of your picture.

    It was an inline one

Change its status to floating and the menu item is no longer grayed.

This kind of features are described in Pages User Guide which is also for you

This doesn't work for me still... I select my image, go to inspector / object placement - and "floating" is greyed out.
There's no other floating anything anywhere.... And both "send object to background" and "move object to section master" are greyed out.

It sound as you have a Page Layout document and not a Word Processing document which is shown in the image above.

    Hi Zebbler,

What type of pages document are you using—word processing or page layout? The type will be identified in the title bar at the top of the window.

Page Layout documents do not have a text layer, nor do they have a Background layer. All objects are floating.

Each 'page' is also a separate Section.

Word Processing documents have both a Background layer and a Text layer. Objects can be inserted into the Text layer (as inline objects), or can be made to float above the text layer (as Floating objects). Floating ovjects may be moved to the Background layer, and from there may be moved to the Section Master to appear on all pages in a Section.

    Regards,

    Barry

The document type will only be identified if you have Page 4.0.5 or earlier.

Since the document type was removed from the title bar you can determine which type you have by looking at the toolbar. Clicking on the icon or the insert menu will say Section if it's a word processing document or Pages if it's a page layout document.
