Q: The iPhone "..." could not be synced because the sync session failed to start

I am trying to sync my iPhone 4 with iTunes and I receive this "The iPhone 'XYZ's iPhone' could not be synced because the sync session failed to start." I have synced this phone many times in the past without any issues and this error just started to occur. I have done all the usual: reset my phone settings, restarted my computer etc. Does anyone have any suggestion as to what I could do?

iPhone 4, Mac OS X (10.6.7), Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Everything turned out to work successfully and I am now running on iOS 5 beta 2 with iTunes 10.5 beta 2. This gave me problems, but I took the jump and it worked

If anyone would like to know how this worked step by step, please let me know and I will be happy to help.

I've solved the Problem with a restart of my iPhone...

As you find it in the release Notes:

NEW:In some cases, your device may fail to sync contacts, calendars and account settings, or back up to iTunes. If this happens, reboot your device and re-sync.

So guys, Running iOS 5 Beta 3 on my iPhone 3Gs and found a solution!.

Just keep your iPhone plugged into your mac (or PC) and reboot then hit 'backup'. SIMPLE!

I've tried this on two 3Gs' and an iPhone 4 currently, all three were not correctly syncing or backing up.

    Welcome guys!

After experiencing many of the same issues as discussed in this forum, here is how I resolved.

Steps to get from IOS5 beta 1 > IOS5 beta 4: (This may work for beta 2.  I did not test)

    1. Plug phone into computer
    2. Force phone into DFU
    3. After clicking "OK", hold down on OPTION and press RESTORE
    4. Point to the IOS 5 beta 4 package
    5. Finish restore
    6. I restored from a previous backup, without any issues.

    Good luck!

Had the same problem and reading through the loines here I think this is the simple solution:

Connect your iPhone / iPad and wait for the message to appear. 'the iphone could not be synced  because the sync session failed to start'

    Click OK

Your device will be shown in iTunes as usual its just not synced so right click on your device and select 'Backup' this will back up everything as normal.

Next upgrade all software iTunes / xcode

Finally restore your device through iTunes using the option key (mac) and select the correct Firmware ipsw

Thats it your ready to restore your backup you made earlier all done without the need to revert back to earlier versions etc

COME ON APPLE!!! You still haven't fixed this yet? We're on beta 4 and I still can't sync! I was just using beta 1 but it just expired and I lost all of my pictures I haven't synced for a month, and leaving that behind I still can't restore from my old backup on ios 5 beta 4. You shouldn't do this to your customers or developers!

Why do you think it's beta software?!  Apple specifically says not to install beta software on a phone used every day.  Are you seriously complaining that the software is buggy?  If you want a reliable, stable version of iOS don't install a beta.

This entire thread shouldn't it even be here, it belongs in the iOS5 Beta developer forum.

I received this error after installing iOS 5 Beta 6.

I resolved the issue unchecking "Sync Photo from.." on my Photo tab.  iTunes deleted my synced photos.

I rechecked the box and resynced and then everything worked!
