Did you ever find a solution to this? I, too, have been experiencing this problem. It has happened twice after system software updates. It was happening continuously at first, then I ran Applejack, and it seemed to solve the issue.
Most recently, I did the software update and it started happening again. This time, in addition to running Applejack, I tried something else: I set the screen to never go to sleep and stopped using my screen dimmer. With the screen on all the time, the issue has not recurred. Just out of curiosity I turned the dimmer and saver on and it happened again. Turned it off, no problem. Very strange indeed.

Ah the infamous person posting about a problem a year earlier but never saying the solution.
I'd completely forgotten about this problem, but it is fixed. If I'm honest, I can't remember for the life of me. From what I recall, I think I just did Google search after Google search for every combination of words and eventually found one that helped. I think it was a matter of removing of .plst file, possibly in addition to updating Firefox. Maybe. I couldn't look into it now because I don't have the desperation fueling me to Google it again, but the answer is definitely out there.
As for the dimmer, no idea, but very odd. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
