If you have upgraded it to 10.6.8, then the REAL fix would be to just reinstall and put it BACK to 10.6.7......that is what I had to do....and everything now works. Evidently, the Lion golden master (due out tomorrow?), also has that audio problem......I have no doubt eventually it will get fixed.....but go back to 10.6.7 to fix it now. And your English is excellent.
I had the same issue as you verlaine99. Try following the steps I posted here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/15594598#15594598
Norice you'll be choosing a different AppleHDA.kext in the 10.6.7 Combo Update pkg. In the pkg I downloaded, the AppleHDA.kext suggested in previous posts did not contain all the necessary info to be able to install it properly and as a result you end up with no sound device at all.
Hope it helps!
Thanks for the answer.
I edited my post but now I check that the forum hasn't been updated. The sentence included in the failed update said that I think my problem started with the release of the 10.6.7 upgrade; it was released on 4th of may and that week was when I detected the problem.
I'll try to solve the issue tomorrow (now it's 01:00 am in Madrid) following the guide posted here.
I am not sure the problem is the last update as 10.6.8 was released on June 23, and you say your problems started early May. Which version of Mac OS X are you running? Also 10.6.7 seems to be the version that has fixed problems for most, but you could try the same steps downloading the 10.6.6 Combo Update just in case.
It sounds like faulty hardware to me, though it could be a combination of both (you first had faulty hardware and now you are dealing with the problems the 10.6.8 update created).
You could try following these steps: https://discussions.apple.com/message/15594598#15594598
Just in case your Time Machine did not recover the correct version of the file. Otherwise I would get in touch with Apple again.
This morning I followed the instructions replacing the file AppleHDA.kext (version 10.6.7 combo update) with no success.
I'll try it again this evening with both versions 10.6.7 and 10.6.6 combo update, if after that it doesn't work I'll consider to format the Mac Mini this weekend with the original Snow Leopard CD that I recieved with the Mac.
If even then the problem doesn't get solved I'll send the Mac Mini to Apple again.
P.S: One question to those that say the instructions posted dind't solve the problem
Do you can check if the toslink wire (optical wire) connected to the Mac and playing music emit any red light?
My wire doen't show any light when I play some audio track, if you can see the light but doesn't work the sound my concluision is that my Mac Mini still has a hardware problem.
If you don't see the light either my problem is due to software too
I'm having the same issue as others in this forum. After the upgrade to 10.6.8, I'm having intermittent issues with optical audio out to my Logitech Z-5500 speakers. I have reverted to version 1.9.9f12 of AppleHDA.kext (the version from 10.6.7), and the issues related to the 10.6.8 upgrade have ceased. However, I now get intermittent kernel panics.

Granted, I have no business mixing and matching kernel extensions with different versions of OS X. I hope Apple acknowledges this new bug soon and releases a patch. The issue is ruining my home entertainment experience.
My two cents,
I reverted...that is erased the HD installed 10.6.3 then updated to 10.6.7. Yeah the audio now works, but there is a big HDMI bug when the monitor is turned off and you try and connect with Apple Remote Desktop. The cpu goes to 100% and you can not remotely connect until the monitor is turned back on. For those who don't need to use ARD then 10.6.7 does fix the audio issue.
After trying to swap the file AppleHDA.kext with vresion 10.6.7 and 10.6.6 I still haven't got any sound throuh the optical audio output, neither AC3/DTS or stereo.
I'm going to erase the Hard Drive and then I'll install the Snow Leopard 10.6.3 like Dan Mcree did, if the result is badd I'll send my Mac Mini to Apple again (would be the third time)
This is really annoying and frustrating
Thank you for your advice
I just tried what you said Dan. Powered up my Mini with nothing
else connected to it turned on and had no problem connecting
to the Mini from my iMac via Screen Sharing. Try that. Maybe
ARD is a problem.
10.6.7 is the only audio solution for my Mini. What's odd is
that 10.6.8 works just fine with 13" MBP i7 plugged into
my system. Although, I have had no issues with 10.6.8
with my iMac itself, I can't really use it to see if the audio
issue occurs with it. Just tied into so much crap in my office
that moving it to test is a pain.
same problem for me ... no sound on imac 27, tried the fix. no help....
apple what the **** are you doing ??????? you wanna bump your customers away ??? then go on with this way of behaviour ...
and i am a long time satisfied customer with lot of apple equipments so far. but maybe i have to reconsider..
