Signing into the iTunes/Mac App Store is down. Not much else to say, you have to wait for these services to be restored.

This has nothing to do with Mac OS X or any settings and it's not a bug.

Yes it's a bug in OS X because the release 10.6.7 works and when you install the OS X update 10.6.8 the bug stops you from using AppStore, same is for 10.7 GM.

It's a bug with the way the OS is seeking information from hardware chipset ID's....

Please do not come here misleading people and telling them it's not a bug; when clearly if you did know what you were commenting about you would understand it's a bug.

I'm not misleading anybody, the Apple ID service for iTunes and the Mac App Store when down about two hours ago. The issue is between the software (iTunes or Mac App Store) and most likely the authentication servers. I do Apple network deployments for a living it's not an issue with 10.6.8 or 10.7 GM you must be having a different issue.

@djtripit - the authentication issue is separate from this other problem - this one has been going for two weeks or so, since 6.8 came out. And yes, it is a bug,as Ashley pointed out.

@djtripit part 2: fyi,  the problem affects only some hardware combinations, i have four Macs three are fine, one is unable to log in to the app store.  Hence why yours may be working fine while some of us are not so happy.

I love apple.  I am sure i will continue to love apple, but this situation is ridiculous.  the most annoying part may be that they can't own up to the issue. if one more person tells me how to resolve my issue with itunes....  i mean at least just tell me that you are working on a solution.  too bad the app store is clearly such a small portion of their revenues...

Ok, now got new 27" i7 iMac. shipped with 10.6.7. I updated it to 10.6.8 and to my surprise I can log into and purchase from the AppStore. Great!

So, checked my MacBook to see if i can log in and surprise, i can't!! not on 10.6.8 or Lion GM.

So it seems it's maybe, like some have said a hardware config issue only affecting some systems.

Also getting "Your device or computer could not be verified. Contact support for assistance."

Emailed Apple Store help 3 times - and although they say they'll get back in 24 hrs - they've failed to

I expect much better from Apple - they've handled this very poorly

Well, I am beginning to doubt that $49.00 I spent to get support a week ago may not be worth it. I had sent logs and system information to support based on an app they emailed. Yesterday got a voicemail saying that engineering got back after looking at my logs and concluded that it's an iTunes problem. I think it's not; some thing ain't right. Wonder if I can get my money back.

I would phone Apple Support back and expline that the problem has not been fixed and the apple.com/support forums are filling up with the same problem and no other users can get it fixed either; I would then ask for a refund and if they refuse I would call my cerdit card compant and have a chargeback issued because they sold you a fix for $49 and it's not fixed.

I have been in online discussions with engineers on the developer forum and they cannot figure this out yet, so posting this link will not help either; however thank you for the kind offer mate.

I've just been on to Apple support for some time

They tell me they have posted the following solution - but I dont see it anywhere

you need to go to :

hard disk > library > preferences > systemconfiguration

... and drag the following file to the trash

    "NetworkInterfaces.plist"

    Then restart and try again

    good luck !

I should add that this worked for me !! Proceed however at your own risk (maybe wise to save that file elsewhere just in case!)

Okay, I have now tried every version of deleting the NetworkInterfaces.plist.  I read that the issue might be caused by the expectation that your ethernet port would be en0 and the Airport would be en1.  My ethernet port is broken, so it does not come up at all.  My airport was coming up as en0 and my bluetooth was coming up as en1. I modified the NetworkInterfaces.plist, so the airport would come up as en1 and the bluetooth as en2, but this doesn't seem to work either.  I am running out of ideas fast.  Anyone else.
