Why not move your images to external drives? Use a referenced library?
Here's a link to the "how to" from the online manual.

shuttersp33d's workflow suggestions are good.
You might try copying your Library to an external drive, confirm that it works (that the copy is good), delete the Library on your system drive, then copy the Library back from your external drive to your system drive. This should force a defragmentation of the Aperture Library package, and might recover some unused space.
You should also consider rebuilding your Library. Back-up first.

Are you creating Previews for your photos? They can take up a lot of space. I only create them when needed.

Thanks so much for your responses so far. Do you know if Aperture is creating multiple files for each raw file I import (thumbnails, previews, master, and versions?) , and then maybe these multiple files and aren't getting deleted when I delete the project?
Do you know anything about this, and how to delete the extra files?

It does create a thumbnail and preview if you have previews turned on (size depending on the quality you choose). That is in the Previews section of your Preferences.
Another link for you. You should check out the whole manual though.
@Kirby Don't you have a good "getting started" type post on here?
