So i bought Lion and its downloading on my usual mac. then went to my server and tried to purchase lion server. i was told i had to buy lion and lion server both for $79. both computers use the same store account. so why do i have to buy lion twice?

According to Apple's Lion Server page you need to purchase both Lion and Lion Server. The server stuff is a separate package.

    Best of luck.

But you dont have to buy it twice. See the EULA for downloads from the App Store.

"License from Mac App Store. If you obtained a license for the Apple Software from the Mac App Store, then subject to the terms and conditions of this License and as permitted by the Mac App Store Usage Rules set forth in the App Store Terms and Conditions (http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/ww/) (“Usage Rules”), you are granted a limited, non-transferable, non-exclusive license:

    to download, install, use and run for personal, non-commercial use, one (1) copy of the Apple Software directly on each Apple-branded computer running Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server (“Mac Computer”) that you own or control;

(ii) If you are a commercial enterprise or educational institution, to download, install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software for use either: (a) by a single individual on each of the Mac Computer(s) that you own or control, or (b) by multiple individuals on a single shared Mac Computer that you own or control. For example, a single employee may use the Apple Software on both the employee’s desktop Mac Computer and laptop Mac Computer, or multiple students may serially use the Apple Software on a single Mac Computer located at a resource center or library; an

Hmm I will be doing my installs when I get home from work today.  If I go to my server, buy lion, then buy lion server and do the upgrade, when I go to my regular mac it should not want to charge me again for lion correct?  Guess I will have to wait and see.

This just happened to me as well, needless to say I'm a bit annoyed. Before agreeing, I went to "Purchased" in the app store and pulled up my previous Lion purchase I made on my Macbook Air. I clicked the install button with the hopes of just being able to pay the $40 for the server apps, but it made me download and pay for Lion again, as well as the Server apps. So I payed for lion twice and server once with seemingly no way to bypass this.

Does clicking through mean you pay twice? That doesnt seem to be what the EULA above says.

    Just tried this also.

I have purchased Lion for my iMac.

Went to my Mac Mini server ad tried to install Lion.  It says I need to have Lion and Server, which will cost 79.98. Even though I already have Lion purchased and showing up in my downloads.

If I try to download JUST Lion Server, it tells me I need Lion and Lion Server and to pay 79.98 for both.

I am reluctant to click Buy Now, as I don't want to be charged another 29.99 for Lion wen supposedly I shouldn't have to.

The way to go here is to download the ServerApp on your iMac and move it to the Programs Folder on your Server, after that, the installation is ready to start, just did it myself.

But how do you install Lion to the Snow Leopard Server?

I bought it on my iMac.  I have both Lion and Lion server in my purchase history, but it is still being a pain.

Copy both Installfiles from your iMac to the Application-Folder on your MacServer and just launch the Mac OS X Install routine.

As long as both are located on your server, the install should run just fine

Yeah, once you install them to your iMac, the install files disappear though.

You would think that it you have both Lion and Lion server in your purchase history, then you would be fine.

Hadn't run the Installer on my iMac, so i still had it located on the HD, ready to be moved.

Give it a shot and remove the ServerApp from your hard drive to a safe location and disconnect the device and try to re-download the install package.

I have the same question but have not been able to filter an answer out of the above.

For laughs I pointed my first generation MacBook Pro at the App Store and tried to buy Lion. Was told (as expected) that Lion was not supported on its old Intel CPU.

Pointed my 2011 MacBook Pro with i7 CPU and Snow Leopard not-server at the App store and tried to buy Lion Server. Was told, "Lion Server Add On can only run on Mac OS X Lion."

Pointed a 2010 Mac Mini Server with Snow Leopard Server at the App Store. This machine was not associated with an account at the App Store, so my answer may be wrong but it appears one can upgrade SLS to LS directly.

To others trying to install on multiple machines may I ask whether you have ever before bought one app at the App Store and installed on multiple machines? May I suggest you are trying to buy the app twice when what you need to do is visit the "Purchased" tab at the top which lists your purchases. If on a machine which does not have all your purchased (even free) apps installed it will provide buttons offering to install the missing apps.

I have purchased both Lion and Lion Server from the App Store via my iMac.

When I go to my SLS and go to the purchases tab and click on 'Install' Lion Server it tells me I need to buy Lion, which I have in my purchases.

If I click on 'Install' Lion, it tells me that because it is SLS, I need to buy Lion Server.

Either way it pops up the "Buy Both for 79.98" window, and I do not want to push it in case it decides I need to really pay $79.98 rather than looking at my already purchased tab.

I wish I was home to try this but won't be for awhle.  I think I am going to try this, unless I get more info before I get off work.

    1) From my SLS purchase Lion and Lion Server.

    2) Make a DVD of Lion (Instructions on multiple sites, like Macrumors)

    3) Update server to Lion Server

    4) Use DVD to install Lion on my regular Macs.

    Will see how that goes.
