Big issues with Mail after upgrade to Lion.  Tried the solutions mentioned above.  After removal of the envelope file, Mail re-imports the messages, but then at the 'optimizing' stage quits without any error or warning...  Never gets beyond that point.  Very frustrating.  Any suggestions ?

May I suggest that everyone with Mail problems beyond the one solved here, please do the following:

In the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder at the top level (not user Application) there is a program called Console.

Open Console and in the search field (upper right hand corner)  type "Mail", copy the information and paste it here.

If the ammount of text is too large try to condense it by making note of the time frame that you had the problem.

There is a lot of advice that one can give, but with that information at hand, it is easier to be more precise.

I deleted all of my Envelope Index files in ~/Library/Mail and reopened Mail.  IT WORKED!!!

    Thanks!

I have read through the thread and followed the instructions given by fellow posters. However, the problem still remains and I have no idea what else to do.

I'm having the same trouble, but only at the 'migrating data' stage.  I've tried repairing permissions and deleting the envelope folders, but without success.  I don't want to delete the whole of the Mail preference folder as I have around 1.7GB of local mailboxes on top of my IMAP and Exchange accounts.

    The console report is below:

I fixed this issue by deleting my mail accounts from System Preferences and re-adding them. Once I did that, Mac Mail opened fine and ALL of my folders were in tact for several mailboxes. Even my smart mailboxes were showing fine.

Charles, the correct name of the file is com.apple.Mail.plist, sorry.

Now I believe that Pxljedi might have a point.

Try doing that, delete your accounts from System Prefences and then try to open Mail.

If it works, please post back.

Dom, you are having permissions error.

Firstly, please select the Mail folder in your library folder.

To get to your library you do the following:

    1. In Finder, you click on the "Go" menu and select "Go to Folder..." (second from the bottom)

    2. And type the following in the dialog: ~/Library/   (or in your case: /Users/Raggediman/Library/)

    3. Select the Mail folder and type command-i (where command is the first key next to the space bar)

On the info window scrool down to see Sharing & Permissions

    What does it say?

After that you can try to run permissions to see if it fixes the problem (via disk utility).

You could fix the permission right from the start, but I want to see what your permissions are.

    It might help others.

The problem I have is exactly what Dom is experiencing. Once I head to Migration Data, it will load less than 10% and it will say Upgrade Failed and Index is damaged. I have ran a verfiy permission and repair disk permission as well. According to what you said Dievy (sorry about the name), from what I can see from sharing & permissions under the get info tag, is that I can Read & Write.

Below is what I got from console:

Liquid_015, your problem is not the same as Dom.

    Your Mail might be hosed.

Try to reinstall the system or you can try the following:

1.Select Mailboxes and then select "Rebuild"

    2. Trash Mail preferences

I think that your problem is realy a problem with the Mail app, but instead of reinstalling you might try some other lighter stuff before.

Wait. So... what exactly can I do? Because I have quite a lot of emails that I do not want to lose. What are the exact steps that I can take?

Dievy: I would asume bullet 1 would to head into Mail and onto the menubar: Mailboxes --> Rebuild. However everything is greyed out.

    Try to follow Pxljedi's suggestion.

    Also check your console file

    Liquid,

I hope you have backed up before upgrading.

If you did not, do it  NOW!!!!

Without erasing, get rid of your plist files in Mail, try to delete the accounts in System Preferences(*).

I don't know your computer skill level, let me know if you have any issues with that.

If you are going to reinstall the system, then first login into recovery mode(**) and try to repair permissions from there and repair the disk from there.

If it does not work, then by all means reinstall the system.

(*) read earlier posts to see how

(**) restart and hold the option (alt) key down. Select Recovery HD when all the disks and do everything from there. That is select Disk Utility to fix the HD and permissions

    Post baxk
