I have the exact same 2 problems as Techdag.
Very, very annoying.
Macbook Pro 17" 5,2
Modified Boot Screen via BootXChanger
Adobe Reader, Photoshop, Lightroom
everything latest instance
Thanks for the sleep-wake workaround, that helps a lot.
The white screen with the 9600M ***** totally, I don´t like to use the discrete GPU since the MB gets very hot.

.. and one more who has exactly the same issues. Here my spec:
MBP 15inch late 2008 (running on 8GB very stable on good old SL). Spent a whole day to update all 3rd party apps and anything which is related to finder, mouse, etc (e.g. totalfinder, bettertouch,..) Nothing help.
Will wait for Apples 10.7.1 -- guess its alraedy around the corner

good point on airdisplay. I am using iScreen (server for iPad screen sharing). maybe someone could check if thats the issue -- as I already tried 3x installation I will not try it again before we see 10.7.1+

Uninstalling DisplayPad WORKED!
You have to delete two files under /System/Library/Extensions :
Then delete the app in your application folder. Restart and voila!
NOTE : I also ran the script to uninstall AirDisplay (spotlight it) so maybe it's this one that was causing the issue.

Most excellent diagnosis! After reinstalling/deleting some stray third-party kxts, all was fixed. Specifically, I deleted my Xbox 360 Controller compatibility kxt and my DisplayLink Driver kxt. I think the DisplayLink Driver did it though. Interesting.
