Q: I am having trouble using iphoto pictures as my desktop background

I just installed Lion today and wanted to set my destop background to cycle through various pics in one of my iphoto albums every 5 minutes.  I'm using iphoto11 and have not had this problem in Leopard.  When I go to set my desktop background, I cannot open my iphoto library as an option.  I can set an individual picture from iphoto, but not select the entire album.  Any suggestions?

There is an "iPhoto" option in your selection.

See picture below

    There is an "iPhoto" option in your selection.

    The option is there, but nothing comes up.  It will not let me click on it nor do any pictures appear below it.  That is the problem I'm running into

    I just installed the latest software update and restarted my computer.  Now it works, so I don't know what was going on!  Thanks for your help!

    Sorry but i have the same problem.

    iPhoto is up to date and i repaired permissions.

    But still no photos. Even in Mail, and iMovie.
    It seems this is an iLife Media Browser Problem.

    What can i do ?

    There is no arrow in your iPhoto pane.

    Do you have any pictures in iPhoto?

    Yes, a lot.
    iPhoto works, i can set desktop background from iPhoto.

    But iLife Media Browser doesn't show any content in Syst. Pref., in iMovie, in Mail, etc...

    Do you have the iLife DVD?

    If so trash all the apps now and reinstall iLife.

    i went back to Snow Leopard and the problem was still there.

    it happens with iPhoto 9.1.5 Update, when your library is not called 'iPhoto Library'.

    Mine was named 'iPhoto', so, i created a new one transfered my pictures and now, EVERYTHING WORKS.

    Both with Snow L. & Lion.

    Be careful of renamed Library !

    I have the same problem but my library is well called iPhot library

     

    Have you antother solution ?

    I have the same issue with one account. But the Library is called "iPhoto Library" exactly the same as another account where all works.

    I deleted all the preferences I could find. 3 of them. And re-logged the account and all is fine now.

    I've had exactly the same problem with SNOW and also after updating to LION.

     

    Sometimes the arrow appears but most of the time it doesn't.

     

    My desktop always switches back to that Andromeda-picture, although i selected an iPhoto-album plus random-selection ... if the little arrow allowed me to.

     

    I spent hours and hours on this ...

    - removing movies from iPhoto

    - shrinking iPhoto from 25.000 pics to 2.000

    - deleting all e-mail and other accounts

    - trying to migrate to aperture

    - and, and, and

     

    Also, if i start iPhoto with cmd+alt, the "Repair the iPhoto Library Database" will climb up to 71% and then freeze for days. All other options seem to work but don't change anything.

     

    Also, rebuilding the library with iPhoto Library Manager didn't change anything.

     

    The only hint from system.log i can offer:

     

    Aug 28 19:55:34 xxx System Preferences[5709]: **** DesktopPref error: DSKiPhotoRootSource -loadData TIME OUT!!! There something wrong with iLife Media Browser

     

    I think, it's up to Apple, to fix this annoying bug and let us enjoy our pictures on our desktops.

    I might have solved it:

     

    1. I renamed my Lib to the original name: "iPhoto Library"

     

    2. I opened the system-prefs for setting the background and then switched to EVERY page of Mission Control and selected my album, set random and interval (If this seemed already set, then i unset and set i again).

     

    Done.

     

    Since then, everything works fine.

     

    Probably it's true, that settings of the former "spaces" collide with "mission control" and these i seem to have overwritten now.

     

    Also, i didn't catch the idea of the possiblity to select different backgrounds for every space, since the preference-pane doesn't appear on every space and has to be dragged from space to space.

     

    All in all this doesn't seem very usable:

    - With SNOW, i could select different backgrounds for every monitor

    - With LION, i can now select different backgrounds for every space, or ..?

     

    I miss the option 'Same background for all spaces'.

     

    So i keep waiting for the next update but i am happy that i solved the big problem and can now see my own pictures as backround again.

    I just installed Aperture 3 and consolidated my iPhoto library into Aperture, and as per suggestion deleted the original iPhoto library ( after moving all masters ofcourse)    All good so far.

     

      But as with you  I couldn`t see my photos in my screensaver/desktop  option. Reading from your discussion I also thought my problem  was a naming  issue.

     

    I just realized that after upgrading to Lion AND importing all master into Aperture 3,  I had to set the preview permission within Aperture3  to allow iLife and iWorks to use previews from Aperture 3.

     

    This solved my issue, and finally I can see my library and folders within the screensaver/desktop again.

     

    Hope this contributes to the discussion.
