It's DEFINITELY some sort of bug and you're not the only one. I just noticed it when syncing my iphone..

Can you be a bit more specific? Under finder preferences, there are boxes to check for the sidebar but I see nothing about what you are mentioning.

I'm having this same issue. All my music files with album art embeded in the id3 tags show blank thumbnails and when pressing space to preview it shows no cover art. I noticed the issue after updating iTunes to the latest version. Albulm art is still present when opening the mp3 files in third party software and in iTunes.

same problem here.... something to do with the update. this exact same problem happened after itunes 9.2 was released -- the bug was fixed a few months later with the release of itunes 10. hopefully it doesn't take apple as long to fix this round.
really frustrating tho.

as we've stated -- the problem is in finder... "Get Info" and/or loading the .mp3 in itunes is fine.

I'm not even showing all imbedded artwork when using "Get Info"...this is for mp3s loaded into iTunes and not loaded into iTunes as well.
This update was ridiculous. Gestures are terrible, my fans are constantly running to cool the machine down, now this petty artwork issue. I'm downgrading back to Snow Leopard..."it just works".

Mine works just fine. Maybe the finder need times to rebuild the icon preview.

Update 104.1 fixes this issue, lets download it and see if it works...
Apple’s release notes are as follows:
iTunes 10.4.1 provides a number of improvements, including:
- Fixes a problem where the media keys on some third-party keyboards work inconsistently with iTunes
- Addresses issues with adding artwork to songs and videos

Yeah, I just tried out, I selected a song, created an mp3 version of it, and the album artwork didn't embed the cover art, 10.3 was working great for me, if only apple hadn't stated that it fixed the album art problem i would never updated to 10.4.1, *****.
Sorry all for that, so, do not update to 10.4.1, it doesn't fix the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have no such problem with iTunes with a library of more than 30000 songs.
I used to be a Weekend DJ with many many Albums.
Which view in iTunes does not give you an Artwork.
One thing to note is the list view, will give you an Artwork only if there is more song than the size of the Artwork icon.
here is an example
I left only two song in the Hush Album to show that list view, wont give you the Artwork in this case.
but as you can see, the info of the selected song show the artwork.
in the finder, without Icon Preview checked, you wont see the artwork.
With icon Preview Activated
I do have more question
Why do you convert the song ?
if the original song is an aiff, wav or a movie, the artwork cannot be inserted inside the file, so converting it will result into a song without artwork.
Sometime you will see a file marked MPEG-3 but it is a video. Open it into Quicktime, export it as a audio file then put it in iTunes, and if the file is mp3 or mp4, AAC, then you can insert the Artwork.
I probably dont fully understand your problem, give me more info but I am using iTunes since the very first version and I never hard a problem with artwork.
Could you give more detail about your problems?
