Under Snow Leopard I was using without any problem an Apple Modem to snd the occasional fax.

Whilst the Print function in Lion stll allows to "Fax a PDF" the modem is not been recognized anymore.

I am getting the error message:

     Unsupported

You cannot use an Apple USB MOdem with this computer

Any ideas ?

You're out of luck.  Apple's USB modem uses the 32bit kernel.  It would not work on Snow Leopard when forced to 64bit kernel, so it's not going to work on Lion.  I have not been able to force Lion to 32 bit.  So, unless Apple decides to make a 64bit driver for the modem, they have screwed yet another nich of Apple users again.

    Thanks Apple

    Prob solved!

With the Zoom 3095 my iMac 2011 faxes perfectly under Lion... I even can use the AppleModem's cord connecting the Zoom to my fritzbox.

Nevertheless, Apple's arrogance ignoring the needs for a 64bit-driver for Apple's own modem is pretty annoying!

    That thread doesn't address Lion.

It's not that we need a new modem as much as we need a 64-bit driver for this (the Apple USB) modem. Is it possible there's some kind of third-party, shareware solution? Some generic 64-bit driver that can be easily acquired?

I just threw out an old USB modem, I figured I didn't need it anymore.

Time to hit the flea market, I guess...

it does in that support for the modem was discontinued at the end of SnowLeopard, and it's still unsupported by Apple in Lion.

This thread, in Snow Leopard Discussions, has some useful information regarding Lion-compatible modems:

Ditch the Apple USB Modem, it ain't goin' to work in Lion, period, unless they write a 64bit driver, and even that might be impossible- the modem itself may not be 64bit compatible. I just spent $14 at Amazon for this-

NEW Conexant Chipset USB 56K Voice, Fax, Data External V.90, V.92 Modem

    Sold by: importer520

    - which came in today and which works like a charm in Lion. I'm sure others have similar stories, and others, as well as me, are deeply disturbed that Apple didn't take half a second to bother worrying about those with this product. Yes, I use it extensively for fax purposes, and as a dial-up backup to my DSL.

See my post here for a review of the $11.49 eBay generic modem.

Apple is worth more than all European banks combined. And it can't devote a little bit of effort to supporting its own products it sold just a couple years ago??  How hard could it be to compile a 64 bit version of this driver?

Apple's quickness to just drop technologies is growing so beyond irritating that I'm now seriously considering switching, when I've used Macs my entire life. (this is about much more than this modem)  Windows whatever can still run ancient software and supports older hardware.  It's not cute, Apple, to continually ignore people's investments in your tech. If you think it's going to make people keep buying and buying, think again. Fed up!

I bought the Zoom 3095 modem as I need to use fax for legal correspondence. Also, if I have to make hotel booking confirmations, I think it is more secure sending my credit card details on a fax rather than an email. An email can end up in a hotel PC, which may or may not have a proper firewall, instrusion protection, keylogger protection etc etc.

Fax works OK but on the main program I fax from, Word 2011, in Lion you cannot no longer use Fax PDF, where you now get an error message. You have to set the fax modem as your print device and then enter the fax number in the third pull down menu under "Fax Information".

Finally, although the Zoom modem faxes and you get the information on the icon on the screen header rail, you no longer hear dial tone and fax sending like you did with the Apple modem. I contacted Zoom and got this back - not very good!

Unfortunately, the Zoom 3095 doesn't have an on-board speaker, and we do not provide drivers (with sound support) for Mac OS X. The 3985 uses OS X's native USB CDC/ACM class driver. So you will not hear the dialing sounds, etc, when using the 3095 on a Mac. We have no plans at this to time release sound files for Mac.

All in all, a pretty poor effort from Apple. I bought a replacement just 15 months ago, after an earlier Apple Fax modem failed. 15 months is not a very long time to cut off software/driver support. I think the least Apple could do is offer us refunds for our non-functioning modems. OK it is not a lot of money to replace but a principle is at stake.

How did you get it to wrk? I have a brand new Mac Pro on Lion, ordered the Zoom 3095 and for the life of me, I can't get it to work. It always says "Not Connected" and when I try to hit the connect button in "NetworK" it immediately disconnects me. I had my first receive-fax attempt today with a client trying to fax me but, no go! I followed all of Zoom's installtion instructions, as well as the Mac set up for printing from fax. I swear everything is as it should be, but the modem just will not connect, no matter what I try.

    HELP!

    Robert,

Contact Zoom help. I also had trouble installing but I cannot remember now what the trick was to get it to say hello. I think there is one stage of the installation which is unclear on the supplied instructions and their help desk clarifies. See my post above about faxing from MS Word. You have to do it a different way from using the Apple Modem under previous operating systems. Zoom's help desk gave me a very prompt reply to my installation issue and the no dialling sound problem (uncurable).
