I wouldn't bother trying to delete the account. This seems to be a widespread problem, and I believe there is no solution so far. See other threads:
Let's hope Apple fixes it soon.

I opened an ticket with Apple.
We tried to create the account on a MacBook running 10.6.8 and it worked there, using password authentication on the outgoing mail.
Created a new user account on the MBP running 10.7 and added it there and there were security certificate issues and I pressed Continue and did not set an authentication password and it worked. I exported my email account Mailbox>Export Mailbox to my desktop. Deleted the account (while in my primary user account) and set it up again, still getting the certificate errors, but ignoring them and not entering a Password authentication and it works.
It's a "throw-away" account I only use as my email when registering at user forums, so the fact that the password authentication on outgoing mail isn't set, isn't an issue in the big picture.
But I can send/receive email from that account now in 10.7
