Is networking protocol different in Lion?

I am wondering what has changed in Lion that would prevent my scanner from "seeing" my iMac on our Local network.  As soon as I installed Lion, I was no longer "visible" to my scanner.  This is a combo machine, and I can print to it just fine.  Also, I can see the other computers on the network and they can see me.  FWIW, the copier/scanner is a Ricoh.  My Mac tech worked on it for over an hour with negative results.

Thanks in advance (and please don't use big words in your reply)

To 'see' a network device, it would have to use a broadcasting protocol like Bonjour. I would be surprised that the Ricoh would be using Bonjour for its scanner, especially if it is the Aficio series. Usually for business copier products the device will send (push scan) a document to a shared folder on the Mac using SMB protocol.

So if you could show the address book entry in the Ricoh that you use to scan to your Mac, or if there is no address book entry, describe the procedure you use to scan from the Ricoh to your Mac, then I can suggest some actions for you.

Well, SMB is still working on Lion. I use it with a Canon imageRUNNER to scan to a folder on my Lion Desktop. If the Mac is not appearing in the browse window of the copier, then check that the SMB sharing is still enabled on the Mac (File Sharing > Options > SMB).

Also, if there is no WINS server on your network, then one of the computers has to act as a master browser for NetBIOS to TCP/IP translation (computer name to IP address resolution). The Lion update will have changed network settings in the Mac so this can delay the updating of the master browser computer by up to half an hour. Thus the Mac will not be seen by the copier for a while after the Lion update. And for the other Mac's seeing the Lion Mac public folder, they will be using AFP - not SMB, to communicate with each other.

If SMB is enabled on the Mac and it has been longer than 30 minutes since the Lion update then try powering the copier off for a minute then back on. This can update settings in the copier and help with finding the Mac. And if you know the Lion Mac's IP address you can always manually register a entry for the scanning to file. The path would be

    smb://Mac_IP_Address/shared_folder

Although in the Ricoh address book you may have to register it as

    \\Mac_IP_Address\shared_folder

SMB has been completely rewritten though, so they might be bugs and some things not working. I would contact the manufacturer support and see if there's anything special needed for Lion.

I read somewhere that the authentication had changed, but as I said I am still able to scan to file using SMB from the Canon, which supports NTLM - no Kerberos. Can you elaborate on the SMB changes or provide links please?

    Hello there,

same exact thing here working with my HP OfficeJet 8500wireless (A909G), all the scan-to-folder options are getting connections errors. Shared folder has the exact same properties and SMB is activated. Connecting via SMB from another Mac is working but not from the printer. Very Bad.  Any ideas?

I'll be interested to hear what you get back.  I have been in touch with Ricoh Helpdesk here in the UK, as I have not been able to use my Ricoh scanner since installing Lion.  They have tried to be helpful, but don't appear to know when new drivers will be available, or what the real problem is (symptoms described below).

Since installing Mac OS X Lion 10.7 (11A511), the scanner will not complete a scanning action. When starting the scanning process from any source (Page Manager, VueScan, or Apple Image Acquire), my iMac communicates with the printer/scanner, but after the scanner starts (lights come on, scan arm starts to move), I get the following error message on the computer, "Could not complete the command because there is no driver or scanner installed." Often, the scanner then displays the message "USB Scan Active", or it gives the normal "Ready" message, but the iMac can no longer communicate with the scanner. After a delay (with the iMac displaying the coloured ''spinning wheel''), I get a further error message on the computer, "MFP is busy! Please try later!" I have installed the latest TWAIN driver (2.00.14) and firmware (1.26) from the Ricoh website, but the problem persists.

I'm getting nowhere fast with trying to resolve the issue, and have now started taking photos of documents, rather than trying to scan them - not ideal...

I have a Ricoh MP C2050 and have not been able to scan (push) to it since Lion was installed on my iMac.  Ricoh Tech Support tells me that 10.7 does not include SAMBA in it as Apple did not want to pay the royalties for it.  They apparently wrote their own protocol that is incompatible with SMB on the Ricoh side.  No updates are planned by Ricoh so I guess this ball along with a number of other problems are in Apple's court.

I am now pushing to a 10.6 mac in my office and picking up my scans there.

If that is true, I will be very disappointed that my business is being impacted by a company that, in recent times, has had a greater cash balance than the entire US Government:  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14340470

Come on, Apple, if you're serious about luring business users, you can't just disable vital business protocols...

    Hey,

If you have solved your issues? Please post it here,

Today bought Officejet Pro 8500A Plus...

Scanning available only from Printer...or Scan To Mail...

    Frustrating with SMB

    Thanks

No progress. Scanner still not working. Have resorts to taking pictures of documents - very unprofessional.

I am very disappointed with Apple. No response to my query to them and no fix in sight for the loss of SAMBA (if that is the problem).

Sat with £350 multi-function laser colour scanner/printer/fax/copier that doesn't work. Grrrrrrrr!

Scanning from an OffijceJet Pro 8500A from the network is completely supported.

I myself scan from an older OfficeJet Pro 8500 over a network almost daily.
