I am in the same situation. I bought my mac mini from Best Buy on June 7th. I have been trying since i got the email about the up to date program. If i use the online store, it tells me that they can't find my serial number, even though it pulls up all infor about warranty, and if I use the long form, it says that the serial number is ineligible. I will continue to keep trying, and hope they get to the end of the list of serial numbers, eventually??

Finally done with serial number and uploading problems though stuck in waiting. It has been 2 days since they e-mailed to me my application is fine and they'll send a code but no luck so far. 2 days to send a code???!!! I don't know why did they decide to use only online download but I believe they can't make it worse than now. Well done Apple!!!!!!

Slight update. I tried to enter the serial number again this eveing and instead of the message, "error - ineligible serial number" I got this, "There has been an error with the system. The adminstartors have been informed, please try again later." So maybe something is being done?? maybe??

Just got off the phone with apple again- it may be up to a week before they release all of the serial numbers to get codes. Apparently its not an error, the demand is so high that they have slowed the release of serial numbers in order to free up bandwidth.

I've been told by Apple that it's because the date I bought it desn't tie in with the date the retailer registered it. Seems dubious but they told me to use the long form and send my receipt. Let's see what happens....

Wow. CHILL OUT PEOPLE. It is only an upgrade.
If you need the upgrade so desperately, why not buy it from the store?
Contrary to popular belief, I'm reasonably sure the Apple Techs are not sitting there going "haha.. they can't download it" in Cupertino. They'll probably be working as hard as they can to fix it, but with stupid, angry, impatient people clogging up the phones, lodging support requests and generally wasting time they aren't going to get anywhere too quickly.
Good things come to those who wait.
In any case, at least you can download this as opposed to waiting for it to be delivered on a DVD.

I think people are upset because:
* When they bought their machines, they were promised an upgrade to Lion when it was released and this is not happening, with no indication as to when it will happen.
* People are being given the runaround by Applecare / iTunes / Mac App Store support (nothing new there).
* They expect things to be tested and fixed BEFORE going live with the upgrade, not after (couldn't a couple of those billions in the bank be spent on making sure things work?)
Why would they bother fixing these problems quickly? If it compels impatient wannabe upgraders to just fork over $30 and buy a copy rather than wait, then that's just extra revenue they wouldn't get if the up-to-date program were working properly.
So, I'm not expecting to see this fixed any time soon, makes more economic sense to leave it broken.

Agreed 100%, it is always the case that some fanboy comes along to troll. I'm no fanboy, and so my judgement is not clouded when I see terrible, arrogant service from a company. Just didn't quite expect it from Apple. I heard it said that "Apple is the new Microsoft", I guess it's true.

No, I got that error too, is it because you left your browser windows open to come back and check the code quickily rather than have to fill in all the forms again? like I did? lol. It times out

Solved (I think)...
After having little success with either iTunes Store support or Apple Customer Service, I called AppleCare. They were more than courteous and, as it turned out, helpful.
Realizing that I was caught in a loop between iTunes support and Apple Customer Service (both telling me to contact the other), the person I was speaking with escalated the call and got a supervisor on the phone.
The supervisor asked me to confirm the problem one more time by using the up-to-date page. Once that was done, he told me to put through a purchase, and said that he would call me back later today to issue a refund for the full amount of the transaction. I was comfortable and satisfied with that solution. In the unlikely event Apple doesn't refund the purchase, I have recourse with my CC company anyway.
The "magic sauce" to getting this done was telling the first AppleCare rep to take ownership of the issue, and ultimately getting through to someone that had the authority to act. It worked for me. Your mileage may vary...
Good luck to all.
