Elmedia Player crashes Lion even though the app is not open. When viewing video (in Chrome, Safari or Quicktime) an Elmedia Player process triggers a crash. If you've ever installed Elmedia Player then you need to remove it from your system in a few places in order to prevent system crashes on Mac OS 10.7. I originally thought this was a bug in Google Chrome because the crashes seemed to occur while using Chrome. Thanks to the crash logs (viewable in Console under /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports) I was able to see a pattern of repeat offenders, primarily the following failure:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

com.eltima.ElmediaPlayer.kext

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task

Steps to resolve:

1) Browse to your applications folder - Delete Elmedia Player

2) Browse to the following location and delete this file - System/Library/Extensions/ElmediaPlayer.kext

3) Browse to the following location and delete this file - username/Library/LaunchAgents/com.eltima.ElmediaPlayer.plist

Hope this helps someone else. Cheers!

YES this did help and with an APPLE TECH we were able to confirm this was why I was getting so many Kernel Panic crashes!  Thanks!  I will pass this on to other people suffering from this!

No troubles NOW...  but it was Elmedia...  and there are several other that have had the problem with it as well...  hard to get rid of it...

I'm having numerous crashes on my macbook pro w/ Lion that are related to elmedia player, but I do not have it installed. Is it used by third party software that I may have installed?

  • 7. Re: Elmedia Player Crashes Lion
    maysundays Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

    Hey Raytonium,

Even if you remove the Elmedia player app from your system you must also remove it's footprint from a few other locations (see original post).

Have you followed all these steps?

    Steps to resolve:

    1) Browse to your applications folder - Delete Elmedia Player

    2) Browse to the following location and delete this file - System/Library/Extensions/ElmediaPlayer.kext

    3) Browse to the following location and delete this file - username/Library/LaunchAgents/com.eltima.ElmediaPlayer.plist

Also, after you've done all that be sure to reboot your machine and verify that the .kext & .plist files are gone. If that doesn't fix your problem then your crashes are probably caused by some other app.

You can investigate your crash logs from your Console (Applications/Utilities/Console.app). Just expand the 'System Diagnostic Reports'  or '/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports' to identify the repeat offernder. That's how I was able to determine that Elmedia was repeadily crashing my system, and not some other app.

    Good Luck!

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm new to macs, so please bear with me. I've never installed elmedia player, so I don't know why it's mentioned in the crash logs. That's why I was wondering if it may have been installed as part of another program. Also, I didn't have any of the files you listed above, to be deleted.

I only started crashing after upgrading to Lion. Never had a problem with snow leopard.

Here's a crash log from this morning that shows elmedia player--but I don't have it installed!

That's odd. Only thing that stands out to me in your crash-log is that your crash was related to a 'WebProcess', whereas mine was a 'kernal_task'. I suppose it's possible that something else you use includes the Elmedia player, but nothing that I've seen before. If you're stuck, I'd suggest two more options:

    1) Contact the Elmedia support team with your issue, and include your crash logs: support@eltima.com

    2) Schedule an appointment with a service tech at an Apple store.

You can also post a note on the Roaring Apps compatibility page if you want: http://roaringapps.com/app:358

  • 10. Re: Elmedia Player Crashes Lion
    Raytonium Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Yeah, I was just surfing the web when that crash occurred. I have several other logs that show itunes, kernal task, etc. but I think elmedia is usually shown as the kernal extensions in backtrace. I thought this was the same thing as the rest of MBP users that are crashing after upgrading to Lion, but their problem seems to be related to a video driver issue.

Anyway, thanks for the info, I'll keep investigating.

  • 11. Re: Elmedia Player Crashes Lion
    maysundays Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

Yep, most of my crashes occured while browsing the web as well (on Safari, Chrome or Firefox). Websites with audio or video trigger the Elmedia player. Next to a virus, the Elmedia player is pretty much the most intrusive junk-ware I've ever experienced.

    Hello, Raytonium!

Elmedia Player can't be installed as part of another program.  It's a standalone app.

Our team posted a lot of replies regarding Elmedia Player and kernel panic.

Please read here my latest reply which I decided to post: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3297016

  • 14. Re: Elmedia Player Crashes Lion
    Raytonium Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

    Thanks for the reply.

Ok, Elemedia Player is not part of third party software, and I've never installed it on my MBP. Then how is it causing my computer to crash? All of my crash logs that I've checked show Elemedia Player as kernel extensions in backtrace. See my post above as an example.

BTW, these crashes only began after upgrading to Lion--I had zero crashes with Snow Leopard.
