Tascam US-122 with Lion

I have a 2009 intel iMac. After upgrading to Lion, my usb audio interface, a Tascam US-122 running the3.40 Mac OS driver from Tascam, no longer powers-up. I'e tried direct connection to the iMac as well as running through a powered USB hub. Any thoughts?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

The same thing happened to me.

When I plug the US-122 in, the entry "Vendor-Specific Device" appears in the USB Device Tree (in the Hardward:USB section of System Information), but the US-122's USB light does not go on. When I plug in a US-122L, "US-122L" appears in the USB Device Tree, and the USB light on the US-122L goes on.

On a Mac running 10.6, the same things appear in the USB Device Tree, but the USB lights come on for both devices. However, the USBlight on the US-122L comes on immediately when the device is plugged in, and the USB light on the US-122 only comes on after the driver has been loaded.

I've filed a support ticket with Tascam. I'll report what they tell me. (I don't expect them to be much help; in the past, when I've had compatibility problems with the US-122, they've just told me "it's not supported" --- even in cases where I subsequently got it to work.)

Unfortunately, Tascam has been pretty bad over the years updating their software. My US-122 stopped interacting in Snow Leopard, despite using the latest drivers. I tried it again tonight with Lion installed just for fun, and it's still not being seen. Yes, the phantom power light turns on, but that's it. It is a lovely piece of hardware, but I think Tascam is done with it after somany years. I went and bought an M-Audio Uno, for my midi, and it's been great.

Same here as well. I have a late 2009 i7 iMac, just upgraded to Lion, and now my US-122 doesn't work. It always worked perfectly in Snow Leopard, for me. I've also installed the 3.40 driver from Tascam, and it doesn't work, even though the website says it's a universal binary. I'll be glad if I can get it to work somehow, as I'd rather not have to upgrade if it's not absolutely necessary.

I do not expect Tascam to update their driver as supporting owners of products 4 years or older may have been forced to be low on their priorities. I suspect we'll all have to upgrade hardware. But after all of this, I do not have much faith in the Tascam brand, so I'll be looking at their many competitors.

True. It is an old interface, in the fast-changing world of tech. But it is a universal binary, so I'm not sure why it's not working. If enough people ask Tascam about it, they might be more inclined to do something about it. Surely it can't be that hard to update a driver...

I also tried installing the 3.23 driver from the website, just in case that might work, but it didn't (of course) so I'm back to where I started.

Here is the official answer from Tascam Support:

Hello Stefan Blome,

Thank you for contacting TASCAM.

Our customer support representative, RBlanco, has written

the following response to your message:

Stefan,

Unfortunately that unit has been discontinued for a few years now and we are no longer developing drivers for it, so I doubt a Mac OSX Lion/64 bit driver will be released. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Thank you for your interest in Teac/Tascam products. If you need further assistance feel free to call us at 323-727-7617 or e-mail us at Custser@teac.com

So I think we need to buy a new Audio Interface 😟

*sighs*

You're probably right. I hate to give up so easily, but I'm not sure that there's much else I can do. I've written to Tascam myself, but they haven't responded to me yet. I expect I'll get the same response though.

Guess it might be a good time to get that US-800 interface I've been eying... (as long as it works with Lion)

Yeah. It killed mine too. Worked fine in 10.6.x Snow Leopard. The TascamUS122 Kernel extention (Kext) is 32-Bit - that's most likely the reason why it won't work... doubtful Tascam will update the driver. Kind of silly I have to use my PreSonus FirePod in the office VS down in the studio. :-(

Incidentally, I found that the US-122L does still work with Lion. I have a couple of those, so I was able to get back on my feet again by getting the latest driver and swapping things around.

Unfortunately, the US-122L driver doesn't support the US-122. Too bad they didn't make it so that a single driver supported all their products.

Ive had the same problem as you guys. And agree with Craig that it has turned out to be an expensive upgrade to lion. However my work around on this was to install Snow Leopard on an External Harddrive and boot it through my I-Mac/Macbook. Seems to work fine this way, its not ideal but it beats spending out on a similar device. Looking around its hard to find any good value item with all the ports I need.

So tascam if you are reading (which i doubt you arent) I will not be buying anymore tosh from you, back to M-Audio me thinks!

Very, very sad that some companies dont support their own - still working perfectly - hardware any more and take the chance to force customers to buying something new.

I also have a US-122 and when I switch to Lion, I will buy something from another manufacturer.

The M-AUDIO FAST TRACK PRO for example is also not the latest piece of hardware available on the planet,

but it looks like there are brand-new beta drivers for Lion available. Can anyone confirm that it is working with Lion?

TASCAM - this was a bad choice not to support your own products any more.
