Q: Logic Pro 8 is not supported under Lion?

Is there a reason why Logic Pro 8 is NOT supported by  Lion. I have been holding off buying Logic 9  for the next Logic release and now I am a little dead in the water. Is my only real option to go back to Snow Leopard? I still don't understand how Logic 8 and Intel native app could fall over.

I know the Arturia ones work off an eLicensor ok, the others I have on the iLok ar processors so I have nowhere to try them.

Your problem with your rationale is that Logic 8 Never stopped working when Lion came out, we all chose to happily upgrade as an early adopter without doing enough research on the matter. I suggest you go back and read AppleRyck's post which is levelheaded and full of suggestions.

I personally will be going back to Snow Leopard (using the time Machine save I did befoe the upgrade that I am sure you would also have) I might even dual boot the OS'es on my iMac to Logic 10 comes along. While it is frustrating and annoying its not the end of the world, and certainly doesn't warant your purile letter that you also never had the decency to keep to yourself.

This is one of the first times I have used the forums after being a purchaser of Apple product for myself for nearly 20 years, and now I know why, between reactions like yours that never added to the conversation. I guess seen as I origionated this question and there have been plenty of helpful people with suggestions on the way and now AppleRyck has summed them all up with an answer that satisiies me I wish this thread could not be stop or I was able to unsubscrie myself.

Sorry noname007, but neither Steve Jobs nor Apple forced you to upgrade to Lion!

Thanks for the Vid man..it works for me..however I would like Apple to put a fix for this in an update..it seems so bad they can place a lie on your computer telling you you cannot use this application on the new lion OS and get away with it. If i was to outright lie to my business customers like that I would be sued..

logic studio 8.0.2 seems to be running ok..i will test the fx plug in s etc soon and let you know how it all goes.

    You are a saviour......

Actually I don't see it as a "lie". If you start Logic 8 under Lion, you cannot use it.

O.K. there's Robert Davies' trick...but it can give mixed stability results inside Logic itself (depending also on which third party plug-ins you've installed) and not to mention Logic 8 wasn't built for Lion (so it can also crash the operating system, you never know what Logic 8 is telling Lion to do is safe, while you can "bet" on Snow Leopard to be safe). I'd say that the trick can be used at your own risk...I would never use it for professional use or for mission critical jobs.

If you use any hardware protected products then these will not work using the method mentioned in the Video. Logic 8 IS NOT compatible with Lion, nor am I holding my breath for it to be.

Why doesn't everybody just use Time Machine or their backup they made before the Lion upgrade to get them back to where they were with a compatible system?

It might not be a "lie" per say... however I do find that Apple lacked any sort of "informed consent"... they could have had a pop-up window appear during the installation informing us that Logic 8 wouldn't be compatible.  I feel as if this kind of information wasn't easy to find in order for us consumers/users to take a logical decision when purchasing Lion.

To a certain degree I agree with you on the lack of information (during the installation itself). But there is a page about it and it was put online on the 20th July (first official day of Lion):

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4807

Then, to a certain degree, I think in this forum we're making it clear for users less prone to be Lion early adopters than us

I am using EastWest  PLAY 3 plugins, authorized with an iLok (first gen) and they are working with Logic 8 under Lion (using the now infamous trick).

    Thanks Rob.

That's really helped me out for now & things seem to be running OK.  Really appreciated. It's an inobvious fix but at least gets me moving forward rather than backwards.  Hopefully Apple will engineer a legitimate fix in an update.

    Thanks Again.

With the deepest of respect (& I appreciate this is totally off-topic) next time you decide to send a particularly informal e-mail of complaint to the CEO of Apple, rather than publicly wallowing in your self importance, consider elaborating on your actual problem & be sure to have it properly proof-checked by an adult!

This is a great popcorn thread: highly entertaining with no relevance whatsoever!

Apple is not gonna release an update for an application that was last updated more than 3 years ago (Logic Pro 8.0.2 shipped in May 2008), more than a full year before SnowLeopard - not Lion! - shipped... Even the next major version of Logic (9.0.0) shipped 2 months before SnowLeopard!

MS Office 2003 is still supported under Windows 7. MS Office, arguably, is a much more profitable piece of software than Logic is.  Make of that what you will.

Most professional recording studios, certainly that I have used, are running a Pro Tools setup. When your business depends on your music production software & hardware, you might well be inclined to keep it constantly up to date & also have the benefit of putting those costs through your company expenses. Certainly in the UK anyway.

I'd argue that Apple Logic is a high-end program predominantly aimed at the bedroom studio market.  Where home sound engineering is merely a hobby & in the very most part non-profitable, I think it's reasonable to assume that Logic 8 is/was expensive enough & still sophisticated enough to not have to spend $$$/£££s upgrading to Logic 9.

Consider the team that Apple committed to the 10.7 program (not to mention the cost in marketing it & presenting it at the WWDC) & then consider the comparatively dwarved team that likely developed the L9 upgrade 2 years ago. L9 Studio upgrade is currently 8 times the cost of OSX Lion. That seems unjustified to me & I really hope the L9 upgrade becomes available to purchase at a greatly reduced cost when the next installment of Logic surfaces in the Apple store.

Rob this is brilliant! You completely made my day! I did not try any fancy editing or plug-ins, but Logic 8 definitely runs under Lion and plays back audio. I'll do some more testing in the coming days.

Just out of curiosity, how did you figure out this hack (or whatever you want to call it)? Thanks again!

    Steve

Tricks of the trade Steve, tricks of the trade - I was just exploring how and why it (Logic Pro 8) wouldn't run, and what may be stopping it - with a view to developing a workaround - when I double clicked on the app's binary in the bundle, and found there was nothing actually stopping it from running at all.

I run a pretty much 'vanilla' copy of Logic, and haven't found anything that doesn't work yet, whilst using this workaround. Maybe it's 'new toy' syndrome, but I find that Logic 8 actually runs better on Lion with significantly lower cpu spiking/usage.

    -Rob
