    You do not understand my problem. The problem is NOT going to sleep, what does itregularly. The problem is the wake of the mac!

    I have no sharing at all.

    Lower laptop lid and laptop screen moves to second display. Lion does not go to sleep.

    Same issue here:

    Close laptop lid -> Lion turns off laptop screen -> Laptop DOES NOT go to sleep.

    (All sharing options disabled)

    It's really annoying because I used close the lid, wake computer up again so only the external display would turn on, then open my laptop lid again WITHOUT Mac OS automatically turning on the laptop display again.

    I can't keep it closed because my MBP will melt my laptop screen. So now I'm forced to either have both displays on, or keep lid closed and generate a lot of heat.

    I had the same issue, resetting the SMC did the trick for me (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964), I also heard if that doesn't work to try resetting your PRAM (https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379).  Hope that works for you!

    This worked for me. Thanks. This has really been bugging me since I installed Lion

    Tried bahrens117 solutions and neither resolved the sleep issue. To recap:

    Close MacBook Pro lid > light turns on in front of MacBook Pro > 5 seconds > all screens appear on second display > raise Mac Book Pro lid > 5 seconds > all screens appear on MacBook Pro

    Sleep never occurs

    I had an issue with my iMac display not sleeping. After looking at Console, I found a bunch of errors regarding an application called SoftRaid. I didn't need this app, so after uninstalling it, my the display went to sleep as desired.

    As mentioned above by others, I would look at the Console for repetitive error messages. If the computer is working hard to overcome the errors with no success, then I am guessing that it may be interpreted as 'activity' and the computer won't sleep.

    Apple will eventually differentiate true user input and background input to determine activity and sleep cycles in a future update.Hey, it's a point 0 release, and for the most part, it is truly excellent!

    Same problem here Macbook Pro (late 2008).

    There are now hundreds of posts about this. Makes you wonder about Apple testing?

    Since Lion my MacBook Pro won't always go to sleep by itself anymore either (it does when I close the lid). It used to work with Snow Leopard. Internet Sharing, Printer Sharing etc. is not akrivated. Resetting PRAM didn't solve the issue either...

    Since installing Lion 10.7, my MacBook Pro also will not go to sleeo, The display goes black, but the hard drive keeps spinning. This happens both when I close the lid and when I pull down Sleep from the apple menu. I am not using an external display. Just my solo MBP with all applications closed.

    KEY NOTE: This only happens when power is connected. If I detach my power cable, my MBP enters sleep mode normally.

    Taking advice of this and other threads, I have:

    :: reset my SMC

    :: reset my PRAM

    :: internet sharing,  file sharing etc. is off

    :: I unchecked "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" (however, when I shut down or restart, my apps and windows reopen from last session; I can't defeat this).

    After all this, when my MBP is plugged in, sleep mode still ain't happenin'. Sleep worked fine in Snow Leapard, etc.

    MBP 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
