Using Workgroup Manager in 10.7 Lion

So I upgraded my Mac Pro dual Xeon to Lion this morning. It of course removed the 10.6 Server Admin tools, as expected.

I downloaded the Lion Server Admin Tools and installed. Most of the tools are working correctly -- Server Admin, Server Monitor picked up my credentials from the previous version and logged into my 10.5 servers with no problem.

However, Workgroup Manager will not work. For some reason, the "Connect" button is greyed out. I can enter my server name/address, user name, and password. But I cannot click Connect, and pressing Enter in the user name or password fields does nothing either.

It is possible that WGM on a 10.7 client cannot manage a 10.5 server. Apple's documentation is not clear on that. However, WGM isn't even getting to that point, because it is not connecting. So this problem would still exist if I were trying to manage a Lion Server.

The "Browse" functionality in WGM works -- it correctly finds the two Apple servers on my subnet. But I cannot connect.

Anyone else seeing this problem?

Adding to this post: I am seeing the same behavior on my 13" MacBook Pro upgraded to Lion today. Being extra careful with this machine, I removed the Server tools while still under 10.6.8, then repaired the disk and disk permissions before upgrading to Lion.

Same exact behavior. WGM "Connect" button is greyed out.

So once again, I ask -- is ANYONE successfully using the 10.7 version of Workgroup Manager??

Hi,

i have the same issues - for some time i was able to connet to my SL server but now the connect button is greyed aut. If you retype the serveradress the button gets active, but if you click connet it says server has reached maximum amount of users, wait until other users disconnect." this is odd sice i am the only one that does connect to the server. I suppose that the 10.7 client does not close connections as it loggs out so there are a summ of dead connetions to the server.

Here is how I got mine to work, I figured ill share since it was driving me crazy...

  1. open workgroup manager
  2. Click "cancel" on the login window (with the grayed connect)
  3. from the menu click on "server -> view directories"
  4. workgroup will load in "not authenticated" mode
  5. click on the lock symbol on the far right
  6. enter your diradmin or admin user name and password

This seemed to do the trick for me, hope you have the same luck I did.

Now I want to know why it stopped working in the first place 😕

I got that same -14000 error as well when I launch WGM on Lion and intermittently got the Too Many Connections error (even tho I'm the only person in on the system). When I used Yaron's solution it worked but for some reason connected me to my OD Replica. Close enough, totally works, thanks!
