Q: iMac won't wake up from sleep using keyboard or mouse

I'm not sure what is happening but as of today neither of my wireless devices will wake the iMac - no problem use keyboard and mouse once the iMac is awake. Yesterday I had problems with the wireless keyboard disappearing from Bluetooth.
Now I have to press the power button if the iMac goes to sleep and even then it is a bit slow to respond. It is real pain in the face. What is the remedy anyone?

My 2010 iMac won't wake up from sleep; period.  The only way I can wake it up is to hold the power button down for awhile, release it and press it again.  Sort of a pain, but it does work.

That is a forced reboot and after doing it a number of times your computer will begin to act up.  It's NOT the best solution.  Believe me, I know.

You're better off just shutting down at night and starting up again when you're ready the next day.

After having trouble with waking my 2010 21" imac for the last few weeks I removed all peripherals except network . As I went thru the progression of reconnecting I found that my external monitor was the culprit

As the external monitor has been in use with the exact same cable for almost a year I have no idea what has triggered this symptom?

    Aha, now that's interesting.

I had problems with my bluetooth mouse going wonky until I shielded the cable of my 2nd monitor with foil.

That gives me a hunch that unplugging the 2nd monitor altogether, could even fix the coming out of sleep problem.

I will try reentering the caliberation of  the second monitor and see if that helps

I had this trouble with my brand new 21" imac.  I ran ideas around with an apple user IT friend and he asked what all I had plugged in.  I had purchased a powered usb hub since I now had an iphone and ipad, etc.  He said he heard of usb hubs often causing issues.  I unplugged the usb hub and it immediatly stopped 'freeing in sleep' as I call it. It now wakes up every time.  Unfortunataely, the day before, I had recycled the packaging for the usb hub so I cannot returne it. sigh....  But at least I am no longer having to climb under my desk and unplug and replug in my imac.  Now I can just tap my track pad and voila! Houston, we have contact!

    LOL

    That's good to know.

and Michelle, you don't have to unplug your iMac from the wall.  You COULD just unplug it from the back of the iMac but there's an easier way.  Just press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds.  That's a forced reboot.  Not a good thing to do but sometimes necessary.

I should also mention, that my iMac (early-2011 model) doesn't always fail to come out of sleep. Just most of the time.

I've sinced turned off the option in system preferences which allow bluetooth devices to wake the iMac from sleep - to see if it would help.

Everytime it does actually work and come out of sleep (about 40% of the time) it says something like "Mouse disconnected" - but it then works fine.

I'm only able to wake without bluetooth because I use a USB keyboard instead of the default bluetooth keyboard that comes with the iMac.

My Imac has been in the genius bar for the past four days as I couldn't wake it any which way without disconnecting from the mains - tried all the suggestions.

They tell me they can't find anything wrong  so it must be my keyboard, mouse or hub!

I will try each of those in turn as see what happens when I get it back.  The problem only started about a month ago and the machine was running fine until then.  I was told it was due to an update, then it was a firmware problme, and now this!  We will see...............

Thanks Darleen for the suggestion and it may work for some with this issue, but with my situation, it did not wake up the computer.  It was as if it was unplugged.  The apple care walked me through ALL the options, but nothing short of unplugging it would work.  Now I know it was the usb hub and have read they are often problematic for pcs and macs.

And, as you suggested, powering it down that way was not something  I was willing to do every time I came back to work on it.  Just not a good plan, and I am sure not good for the computer in the long run.

I do encourage anyone on this thread who is having this issue to unplug whatever you can and let it run for a day of two and see if the issue stops.  then plug one thing in at a time.

    good luck,

glad to hear you sorted it out Terry, the hub was my issue too!

Knowing it at least allows you to make choices.

I have a 21" iMac that has given me the following symptoms off and on for over a year:

    • Wireless keyboard Key Caps light will fail to respond properly after machine goes to sleep.

    • System freezes when switching users.

    • System freezes and unresponsive finder menu from time to time.

    • Unresponsive right-click and/or scroll with wireless mouse from time to time.

    • Machine often will not wake from sleep, requiring reboot.

I believe I have cured the iMac of these ills by doing the following:

    1. Under System preferences, select Network.

    2. Click Wi-Fi, select minus button to Delete WiFi.

    3. Recreate WiFi by choosing plus button.

Using this process, my iMac stopped all bad behavior. I did this once under Snow Leopard, and again, just recently under Lion. Apple actually replaced the computer for me once, but the new one exhibited the same behavior. I connect to the internet mainly through ethernet, but I've always noticed my problems were somehow related to the WiFi. I can't guarantee this is the exact cure, but after many months of struggle, I belive this might be it, or at least related to it.

iMac running great for over two weeks since I last did this step. Here's hoping that if the problems come back, I'll be able to fix it this way. Interested to see if anyone else has success with this.

Put me down for the same problem!  I got my 21.5" iMac in April 2011.  Sometimes it wakes when I tap the keyboard or click the mouse, sometimes it doesn't.  This happens randomly (I've been tracking it), sometimes between uses during the day, sometimes the next morning after a good night's sleep.  I can hear it running in the background, but the screen is black.  A forced shut down & restart is the only thing I know to do.  Anyone found the fix yet?

Update:  I just now turned off the Wake for Network Access, as suggested above.  We'll see....

I had the same problem with a brand new 21.5" iMac. I believe it was an unpowered USB 2.5" HDD that was attached to my Airport Extreme. It's detached now, and the problem is gone. Similar solution to the others with unpowered USB hubs...
