I'm still experiencing the issue, everytime I turn on the Airport, I have Kernel Panic.

In my agency we are avoiding the update (we have lots of middle-2010 iMacs) because of this issue.

I have the same problem, I bought my iMac 21,5" in November, 2009. I had two kernel panic, with the same report error.

    Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

    com.apple.driver.AirPort.Atheros40(500.55.5)[01000ACB-C064-3F42-820F-BDE2008267 25]@0xffffff7f80e64000->0xffffff7f80fa3fff

Do you think that Apple will propose update for Airport ?

In June 2011 a build was offered to maybe five thousand people at WWDC.

Add to that the number (unknown) of members of the Mac Developer Program who — without attending WWDC — tested builds 11A480b, 11A494a and (for around three weeks) 11A511 before 11A511 was released.

Testing was and is naturally broad-ranging but like any operating system, there's never perfection.

Any kernel panic is clearly undesirable, let's focus on identifying possible causes and (as you suggest) reporting to Apple, rather than criticising the pre-release testing.

If it's any help, I was having the exact same problem and once I updated Perian to the latest version that's just been released, the problem has stopped (fingers crossed). Could be related to streaming media over the Airport. Anyway, if you have it installed, try updating Perian.

    Off topic: reporting without infrastructure

I don't know what happens to prerelase reports that are received by Apple without the infrastructures that Apple provide for prerelease stuff. Assume that all things anonymous get whooshed into some intelligent melting pot and simmered until patterns are identifiable; but that anonymous patterns alone are not enough to progress some things — of a highly technical nature — to a satisfactory conclusion across an entire product range.

The report version (9) that appears in .crash and other files in Lion is two greater than the report version (7) seen in Snow Leopard. Another assumption is that this richer reporting allowed — and will continue to allow — fixes for Lion in pleasantly short timeframes.

On topic, another long shot: 64-bit kernel, 32-bit kernel

If your computer is not limited by firmware to EFI32 (old models such as MacBook2,1 fall into that category) — and if your computer defaulted to 32-bit kernel and extensions with Snow Leopard:

    • try forcing the 32-bit kernel with 10.7, see whether the kernel panics are as easily reproducible.

(The rationale for this is in a different topic.)

    MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), 8 GB MacBookPro5,2 GeForce 9600M GT

So I stand corrected.  After a clean install it does seem more stable but I woke up this morning to a completely frozen machine, same kernal panic com.apple.driver.AirPort.Atheros40(500.55.5).. So clean install will only help but not solve the problem.

I updated Perian and after 5 minutes I had another Kernel Panic, so in my case this was not helping.

Yeah - 100% jinxed myself. Had been running for about 5 hours with no problems. As soon as I posted this, I got a kernal panic - was mucking around with my iTunes library - on a networked drive - at the time.

I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro with momenus xt h/w and 8 GB RAM upgrade. Everything was working fine until Lion happened. I changed hard drive to eliminate hybrid issues but the kernel panics are crazy. Every now and then they are frequent. This is driving me crazy. I have a pretty good machine and do not want to get a new one just yet.

Same issue here, I have iMac 21,5" late 2009, and I have many Kernel Panic.

A friend of mine is having the same issue.  I had him replace the IO80211Family.kext with version 3.2 from Snow Leopard (Lion contains version 4.0).  It's only been a day but so far the issues are gone.

Apple is not here. Only users like yourself.
