You probably have a Core Duo and not a Core 2 Duo? maybe is this correct?

This is about smcFanControl. I have it on ALL of my macbook pros. Crank it up to 6000 and just leave it that way. These laptops run way too hot. They will last longer that way. It is way easier to replace a fan if that ever becomes necassary. probably won't but it's better than replacing a logic board.

Late 2008 is unibody, it's Core 2 Duo, not Core Duo.
Back in SL, I had SMCFan Control, and CoolBook, and they were working just fine.
But CoolBook cease working in Lion.
And TimeMachine, Indexing is just causing my MacBook Pro BURNING EXTREME HOT!

It could require the thermal paste replaced on the cpu to heatsinks. I have done it to a macbook pro 17 and it worked. (iFixit.com for detailed instructions) This along with replaceing the faulty logic board because of overheating Just don't let it get to hot too long. A too hot logic board can develop cracks in the solder connections. smcfancontrol says they work with lion so consider that. I also use a usb powered laptop cushion with a fan in the middle. I don't know if it helps the laptop but it feels great on my lap.

Funny how macbook pro or any Apple productsfans never work...........use smcFancontrol- I run at about 3500 rpm and then when temp climbs above 135 i crank up to 6000rpm

My late 2008 Macbook Pro runs hot as well. Its run so hot at times where it has shut itself down. I downloaded and installed something called Fan Control to help out my fans... because obviously, they weren't doing the job they were ment to do in keeping my laptop cool. My fans run at around 4000rpm, going higher when it gets really hot. Calling my friends on skype used to cause my computer to get really hot, and it was growing harder and harder to call and talk to my friends that live in other states... after installing Fan Control when I call on skype, it doesn't run NEARLY as hot as it did... but it somehow does run hotter when my screensaver comes up. I have no idea why though.
