Jul 28, 2011 12:16 AM in response to Lexus Luthorby NicoNB,@Lexus The only display that seems to work fine is the current 27"ACD. In the beginning of this discussion some people were given a special trade in offer, their 24" ACD was swapped for a 27" ACD. They reported no flickering and black outs on their 27" ACD.
The problem is with the 24" ACD (and non Apple external monitors) in combination with a Thunderbolt port. Monitors work fine on 'older' Mac's with a mini display port but not if they have a Thunderbolt port.
Here is a discussion about this issue on Macrumors
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1114280&page=5&highlight=thunderbol t
And here is the story on 9to5Mac
There are probably a lot more Apple sites were this issue is discssed, hopefully other can give you the url's.
I have contacted one of the guys behind http://timecapsuledead.org to discuss opening a similar site for our problem.

Jul 28, 2011 12:35 AM in response to NicoNBby Lexus Luthor,@NicoNB...I know of the problem you are speaking of as I had an original Macbook unibody hooked up to my ACD w/ no flickering problems at all. Then a month ago I get my MBP 13" and immediately the problems begin. There is deffinetly a problem w/ the TB compat. because I know my ACD works fine on the older MB Unibody as I have switched them out back and forth to make sure.
I have an appointment w/ the Genius Bar tomorrow to start my claim. If I get anywhere, I will post my results. I don't hold my breath though. You all have done much more than I have and seem to have ended up in the same spot...waiting for a FW fix.

Jul 28, 2011 4:59 PM in response to Lexus Luthorby Lexus Luthor,Just got back from my "technical support" appointment with the "genius" @ the Apple store and got the same run down and answer as everyone else..."there is an official internal apple article about the issue and that there is nothing I can do for you other than tell you to wait for the firmware fix which will be coming soon."
He did give me the number to Apple Care and told me to call customer relations...which he highly recommended. I go the hint he was kind of telling me to do so. I will be calling tomorrow. The problem is that i don't want to go throught all of the technical BS and do the testing and such. I just want a fix.
Will keep you posted.

Jul 28, 2011 5:28 PM in response to Lexus Luthorby Wdrhash,For all those having problems, the only solution is to call customer relations and nicely ask for a hardware capture of your 24" ACD in return for a 27" ACD.
I dealt with AppleCare, in store, and customer relations were the only ones that could resolve the situation. It took multiple calls to multiple customer relations representatives but I was able to finally get a rep willing to do the hardware capture.
Considering how many months this has been a known isssue, and no working software fix has been released don't expect a software release anytime soon to resolve the issue, if ever.
The problem is compatibility between the 24" ACD and thunderbolt on all 2011 Macs, the 27" ACDs both new and old work fine, I'm certain this is a hardware compatibility issue.

Jul 28, 2011 5:32 PM in response to Wdrhashby Lexus Luthor,Thanks Wdrhash...what did Apple Customer Relations finally offer you...or should I say give you? Was it credit towards a 27 inch or a complete swap?
Thanks for the info and advice. Will use it when I call tomorrow in hopes of starting what I am sure will be a lengthy process.
Thanks

Jul 28, 2011 7:33 PM in response to Lexus Luthorby Wdrhash,I received what they call a "hardware capture" where they sent me a brand new 27" ACD and I returned the 24" ACD to them.
It took over four calls to customer relations to get this done however. First person I talked to was supposed to call me back, never did and each time I called for him there was some excuse. I talked to another lady who was very rude, offered me a $100 coupon and essentially told me that was the best they could do and to wait for whenever a software fix was released. The next day I called back again, spoke to another customer relations rep and requested a hardware capture, she told me shed research the issue and call me back and within 2 hours she returned my call, took my information, initiated the hardware capture, and in two days I received a new 27" AcD.
Be persistent, keep calling Apple until you get someone willing to help, email Steve Jobs if that's what it takes but don't give up until you get them to replace your ACD.

Jul 29, 2011 10:37 AM in response to Wdrhashby ptaylor874,I found a DVI to Mini-DP adapter made by Atlona that might work:
http://www.atlona.com/Atlona-DVI-to-Mini-DisplayPort-Converter-p-17859.html
I ordered it from Amazon, as it was much cheaper there (though still not cheap!):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002JQPRPG/ref=ox_ya_os_product
I plan to use it with the HDMI to DVI adapter that came with the Mac mini. Hopefully these two adapters will play nicely together.
If this works, you could probably get a Mini-DP to DVI adapter and one of these, and it would probably work with a MacBook Pro. This adapter does need a USB port for power, though, so that's a disadvantage.
It should be here tomorrow, so I'll post back and let everyone else know my result.

Jul 30, 2011 8:07 AM in response to Lexus Luthorby DEUCE SLUICE,My new Mini, which had Lion out of the box, flickers.

Jul 30, 2011 8:21 AM in response to DanRybby tlindsey,Lion has NOT resolved the issue on my i7 MacBook Pro. If anything, the flickering is more frequent than in Snow Leopard.

Jul 30, 2011 8:47 AM in response to DEUCE SLUICEby ptaylor874,My Atlona DVI to Mini-DP adapter arrived this morning. When attached to the DVI end of the HDMI to DVI adapter that came with my Mini, with the 24" ACD attached to the Mini-DP output on the Altona, I have yet to see any more blackouts.
I installed it about 2 hours ago, and it's seen mixed use since then.. Probably 45 minutes of use at various times over that 2 hours, but I have seen no screen blanks. When I first installed it (switching from a 5+ year old 20" ACD on my HDMI port), it didn't work properly right away. But after I put my mini to sleep via the power button, then woke it back up, it has worked fine. About the only negative thing to say about it so far is that it seems to take several extra seconds to wake up the monitor from sleep than I'm used to... Like 5 seconds longer. But I can live with that.
I'll give it some more time and post back later to let everyone know for sure, but this looks like a winner.
I imagine that this would work equally well with a MacBook Pro and a Mini-DP to DVI adapter, if you can get over the price tag of this item. I figured it was a small price to pay to be able to use the existing hardware I'd already paid for.

Jul 31, 2011 6:12 PM in response to ptaylor874by ptaylor874,Today, I played Civ V for about 5 hours, and didn't have a single screen blank or horizontal video shift. Right after I exited the game, though, the screen blanked. I think it may have been because the video mode changed, or something. (I do have a hot corner set to shut the display down, but I don't think that was it.)
Anyhow, since then, it has been fine with one exception. A few minutes ago, I tried to wake up my Mini, but the screen stayed blank. After several seconds, I hit the space bar and heard a sound (like when you don't have focus on the password screen), but the screen stayed dark. After another 5-10 seconds or so, I got impatient and pressed the "reset" button on the Atlona, and within a few seconds, I was at my login screen.
So, while I wouldn't say that an Atlona adapter is an ideal fix, I think it's acceptable considering the alternative we have from Apple currently. -
Aug 2, 2011 5:16 AM in response to DanRybby Benjamin1981,15" Macbook Pro i7 2,2GHz and a new 2,3GHz i5 Mac Mini here. I'm having flickering on my 24" LED Cinema Display from both machines using the Thunderbolt port. It is really annoying. Will soon be calling Apple Care and make a complaint as Apple is still advertising full compatibility between Thunderbolt and Mini Display Port.

Aug 2, 2011 9:17 AM in response to Benjamin1981by NicoNB,Today I made another phone call to Apple. Same story as the last 2 months.
The story remains the same though, after contacting someone from tech support they told me it is a known issue like I already told them and it is being inder investigation. Talked about customer care. They offered me to put me through to customer care, no time for that so I will give them another call next week and then see how supportive customer care is.
