Q: is iDVD included with the new Lion iMacs?

Macrumors just posted this on the front page, and I want to make sure iDVD is included with the new iMacs (that come with Lion pre-installed).

from Macrumors front page:

"Apple is in the process of phasing out iWeb and iDVD and does not offer them for download via the Mac App Store or include them on the new MacBook Air and Mac mini."

And I notice on Apple's iMac page, they don't mention iDVD:

    Yes it's included.

NOTE: I stand corrected, I'm not sure. I would recommend calling the online Apple Store to find out though. The phone number is in the upper left corner of the store's home screen.

I just called.  They said that iDVD and iWeb is included with all new computers.  I'd still like some verification from someone who has a new computer that came with Lion installed.

Apple Support did confirm that neither iDVD nor iWeb are available from the online store.  Which makes me wonder how you are to reinstall those programs if you do a clean install of Lion.  (If you do a clean install, you download the other iLife applications from the online store.)

Well I've just received a new iMac with Lion installed and it has neither iWeb nor iDVD on it - I was looking on this discussion board to see if anyone else has found the same.

I'm not surprised about iWeb but iDVD I wasn't expecting.

Can I get anyone else to confirm this?  If it's true, I would have expected more than one person to be posting (and complaining) about it.

Can anyone else who has a new iMac that came with Lion pre-installed confirm that it includes neither iDVD or iWeb?

    Thanks

My new iMac came with Lion preinstalled and neither iWeb or iDVD are installed on it, and as there are no restore disks included and they are not available for download through the App store there is no way of installing them.

Thanks.  That seems like a bad decision on Apple's part.  When I order my iMac, I might ask if they can include a free copy of the retail version of iLife '11.  I need iDVD.

That sounds like a foul-up at the Chinese factory to me.

When your hard drive fails (notice I didn't say "IF"). The restore disk is necessary to rebuild and service your computer.

No foul-up, computers with Lion pre-installed don't ship with restore discs.

So if you have no Internet access, you are doomed.

With Internet access you are faced with a complicated mess.

All of this, to save a $0.50 DVD

    Hi Ziatron,

Sorry this is badly off-topic, but i wanted to ask:

I've seen you recommend iMovie 6  over the later versions ('08, '09, '11) due to an increase in picture quality when sending to iDVD, is this relevant to DV (tape) only? Or does it have any bearing on HD capture (AVCHD)?

    Thanks

    Graham

I was looking at this thread yesterday because I also use iDVD extensively and decided to do some searching on the Apple website. It appears they're wanting to concentrate on iMovie (new "movie trailers" feature plus new themes) and FCP X which hasn't proven to be a big hit so far. And, since they've built in "share" to pretty much everywhere (Facebook, etc, etc) from both iPhoto and iMovie, I guess they think it's time to ditch iDVD.

May I suggest that anyone using iDV D send some feedback about keeping it:

    http://www.apple.com/feedback/idvd.html

As for saving on a DVD, I don't believe that has anything to do with it; I believe it is Apple's idea to move us away from physical media and become MAS and "iCloud dependent". No install media, no external backups - only digital downloads and iCloud storage/backup. I'll stick with my LaCie's and SL if necessary (fortunately I have a fully functioning SL clone).

Just to be clear about this:

Lion currently is only available as a download from the App Store or, with a newly shipped Mac computer.

Apple is going to release a USB thumb-drive with Lion on it for $69 USD soon, that would enable you to restore your computer if you have no internet access.

However, you could easily avoid this problem by using Carbon Copy Cloner and an external drive to make clone of your entire main HDD for an immediate restoration anytime, internet or not.  CCC is fully compatible with 10.7 Lion.
