After loading OS X Lion on my MacBook Pro, I noticed that my display brightness controls no longer work.  Has anyone had the same problem?

And what MBP model are you referring to?

    Hello Sig:

It's a MacBook Pro with:  2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

But it's odd.  After a second restar, the brightness controls started responding.  The OS X Lion upgrade hasn't been totally pleasant.

    Thanks.

    I have the same problem.

I've closed my MacBook Pro (2011 model) and am operating on the 27" LED exclusively (power, monitor and USB plugged into the MBP). I'm using Apple bluetooth keyboard, Magic Mouse and Trackpad. I've got no control over the screen brightness of my LED whatsoever. The MBP and the bluetooth keyboard both appear to manage the display brightness for my MBP. On Snow Leopard, the bluetooth keyboard controlled the LED display and MBP keyboard controlled the MBP.

I've tried restarting and opening up the MBP lid. Can't quite figure it out just yet.

    Any help well appreciated.

    Hello Smcstewart:

My problem with the brightness control emerged mysteriously when I loaded OS X Lion.  It then mysteriously disappeared.  I wonder if updating iWork, iTiunes, etc and restarting my MBP a couple times had something to do with it.

    Hi Sevag

Glad yours is working. I've got the latest Lion, iWork updates through the App Store along with the 64-bit iTunes and still no luck with the brightness control. I'm guessing it's a Lion defect and will await a fix in the near future. Might just buy an iMac!

    Cheers - Steve

    Hi All,

You can fix this by going to:

System preferences -> keyboard -> uncheck "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys"

    Cheers!

Nope, that's not it. Might be for some people, but the issue appears to be a defect rather than a setting. I've got a brand spanking new Lion install - i.e. I installed it from scratch, not on top of Snow Leopard and all settings are pretty much default.

Still something for Apple to fix up I suspect.

This suggestion worked for me on my late 2009 13" MacBook Pro (MB991LL/A).  At some point after upgrading to Lion, I noticed my screen brightness controls didn't work (they had no effect).  In my Keyboard preferences pane, the suggested setting "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" was already unchecked, but checking it and then unchecking it returned the function to the screen brightness controls.

    Thanks!

I have upgraded my 2008 White Macbook 2.4 GHz Intelcore 2 duo 4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM to MAC OS X LION and then installed a new 500gb hard drive replacing my old 160gb.. After installing this the brightness goes down while the the laptop is still on. It comes back again if I restart it. Then i discovered that after the brightness goes down if i hold the reduce brightness button and then hit the increase brightness button the brightness restore to normal. But again after some time the screen becomes dark and then I have to again repeat the above operation. Please offer any suggestion.

    Thanks

    Shashi

Same problem: MacBook Pro 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo after upgrade to Lion when I push the brighten or dim buttons on my F keys I see the image appear for brightening or diming with a circle and cross through it appearing below but nothing else happens.  Tried switching "Use all F1, F2, etc" on then off but this does not fix the problem.

Until this gets fixed, go to: System Preferences>Displays and move the brightness slider to your preference.

I've found in Lion that what used to be the screen brightness controls now control the backlight on the keyboard instead of the screen brightness. The only way I could control the screen brightness was through the Displays system preference. Hope that's helpful to someone... almost forgot, this is on an October 2008 Unibody MacBook.

Can you do that in Lion? My System Pref/Displays shows no slider.

Switching to the "higher performace" mode for graphics and then back to the "better battery life" mode restored the slider in Display settings and the brightness control from keyboard for my MacBook Pro (late 2008).
