Does anyone else have an issue where Aperture won't quit?  It happens about once a week, where the quit action gets stuck.  When I quit the application, I get the normal, "Updating previews..." message.  The progress bar starts all the way to the right, as if it is complete, without even going through anything.  It stays that way indefinitely.  I eventually have to force the application to quit.

Has anyone seen this?  Does anyone know what it is or what to do about it?

Saying it goes on indefinitely would indicated it is still going on now but obviously it isn't. So how long did you wait before force quitting?

How big is your library? On the occassion when this has happened have you done anything different, large import, vault update, Aperture open for an extended period of time, etc?

    Frank,

The first time it did this, I let it go overnight and it was still going when I checked in the morning.  I'd say it went probably 7-8 hours and looked the same in the morning.  I call that indefinitely, because I couldn't just let it go any longer and I wanted to use it.  With no indication bar to go by, and that length of time involved, I figured it was stuck.  I say no indication bar, because when this happens, the bar starts all the way to the right as if it is finished.  Usually it starts about a quarter of the way through and then finishes through.

I will say that I did update the vault last night before normal quitting.  I can't say that I do this everytime before experiencing this issue.  My library is a fully referenced library, so the library itself is scaled down to 25.61 GB. Aperture was open for an extended period of time, but it has been at times and not given me this problem.

Are you thinking I should just let it go after all that I have explained?  Perhaps I shouldn't leave it open unattended for longer than normal working periods.  I can try that and see what happens.

In the past when I have quit just after a vault update I have had similar problems though my Aperture finally shutdown after 45 mins or so.

Now I make it a point of keeping Aperture oprn and doing a few things after the update and before quitting. I haven't had the problem since. It might be worth a shot.

I don't keep Aperture open unless I'm activly using it. Of course I don't mean that each time I switch applications I close it but if I'm going to be away from it for an extended period I will close it. I also have gotten into the habit of periodically closing it and reopening it if I've been doing a lot of heavy work. Also I will ocasionally run a library repair even if everything is running smothly.

None of these things are recommended and they fall more under the heading of voodoo then computer science but so far, knock on wood, I've never had a major library meltdown. And just in case I do I keep a chicken handy to swing over the computer

    good luck

I often have that problem after making a lot of changes.   I have to do a Force Quit (Option-Rt click on icon) to get it to quit.  I haven't noticed any downside to doing that, but I generally reopen and then Quit right away to make sure it has been closed correctly.   I have 24,000 photos in my database.

IME, Aperture has always eventually quit, even if it took a week.  I have not had Aperture hang for longer than a day or so since (iirc) the 3.1 upgrade.  I have seen Aperture crash, but that's different.

I do recommend against force-quitting, but oftentimes it is unavoidable.

In addition to what Frank has recommended, I have found the following helpful (and, like Frank, list this as voodoo, as I really don't know that these pins hit any actual nerves):

. Let it run overnight if you can.

. If you can't, or you have, and it is still processing and/or appears to be hung, force-quit it

    . Reboot

. Launch Aperture.  Confirm that you Library appears to be intact.  Load Photos view and scroll the entire grid.  Check your mail or get a cup of coffee (I'm pretty sure Aperture actually waits for you to not be using it in order to go into "just getting my tables in order" mode).  Close Aperture.

. I don't think I've ever gotten this far without Aperture closing properly.

. Repair your database (instructions are on the Apple Aperture trouble-shooting page)

. Re-open and you should be good to go.

If your Library shows up damaged after force-quitting, close it and run repair and rebuild immediately.

If "Rebuild" doesn't fix your Library, you will have to revert to your last back-up.

I want to repeat Frank's general advice -- I do the same thing, and suggest it to anyone but the lightest users of Aperture

I do one additional thing: any time I experience any of the "won't close/won't crash" hangs, after I've gone through the above, I will set Aperture up to run unmolested overnight.

I would make sure you are on Aperture 3.1.3, from the release notes at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2518

    • Resolves an issue that could cause Aperture to stop responding on quit while updating previews.

    Owen,

Thanks for chiming in.  I am using 3.1.3, so I don't think that is the issue.  I'm going to try to stick with shorter sessions and closing out of the app if I am not using it.
