Q: No Signal on HDMI TV After Lion Upgrade

I just installed Lion on my Mac mini and my TV no longer receives a signal over HDMI. I've tried a bunch of different cobinations of restarting the TV and computer without any luck. Without a display, I can't use Screen Sharing to try chaning any of the prefrences. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Thanks.

Discovered some thing new to add to the confusion.  If I am

connected to my Mini from another Mac with Screen Sharing,

I can power down receiver and TV and then end the Screen

Sharing session and then come back later, turn on the TV

and then receiver, and all was peachy.

Thinking that maybe, just maybe, everything was fixed, turned off TV

and turned it back on.  Video trashed yet again. Had to do the

    PRAM/SMC thing yet again.

Connected via Screen Sharing again when things working, and could do

any combination of turning on and off of TV or receiver without any issue.

    Strange.

I believe i can offer a fix for some of you:

Before you can try to fix the problem, you need to have desktop access to the affected computer either by connecting it to a secondary working screen(if it's a laptop you're already sorted) or enable Screen Sharing so that you can remotely control the computer while it's connected to TV. If you do not have access to a secondary monitory, you can enable Screen Sharing by booting OS X into Single User mode(boot into single user mode bu holding down "cmd - s" when powering on the computer) and type these commands:

         mount -uw /

         launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.screensharing.plist

         reboot

When the computer starts up, you can remotely connect to it from another mac either via Finder

or Finder -> Go -> Connect to server - and type in: vnc://IPADDRESS

Replace IPADDRESS with the IP address of the affected computer, you can find it by looking at your DHCP server address leases/client list.

Or using VNC client from a windows computer and connect to the IP address.

Now that you've got desktop access the affected computer and it's connected to the tv:

    • Download and install SwitchResX (10 day demo, google it)
    • Start SwitchResX, select your TV on the left side:
    •       Click - Disable HDMI 1.3a (enables more resolutions on HDTV)
    •       Click - Default Resolution
      •   set it to 1920 x 1080 @ 50 or 60 hz (or the setting your television can handle or you prefer)
    • Close SwitchResX
    • reboot and the computer should start displaying on your TV, if not try adjusting the resolution.

There is an non demo free alternative to SwitchResX called DisplayConfigX which i'm in NO WAY SURE works with Lion or even can fix the problem, but it's worth a shot if you want to try something else.

so you say this will work with the minidisplay port to hdmi using the LCD TV as a second monitor? cause everything worked fine before Lion, I used to have Snow Leopard updated up to date and after I bought the Lion OSX this started happenning and I am from Argentina, we have an apple store here but whenever I need to ask something to the "genius" guys from here they look at me as I were talking about sky rockets and not apple stuff.

I believe this will work yes.

This is what i did to make it work on a Mac Mini 2011, tried with direct connected HDMI and also tried a MiniDisplay to HDMI converter to TV, both worked.

It believe it will work on non minis as well.

that actually worked on the macbook air.  Thanks but i have 2 questions.  After the 10 day trial os over will i have to purchase this for the fix to be permanant?  And on the mac mini, is it possible to use a display that works to set the setting for display, or does the mini have to be hooked up to the monitor thats not working to calibrate it?

Thanks your solution was the first that has worked, and apple as always is dragging their feet and providing nothing.

Same issue here! Just bought the new mac mini and receive no video output with my Philips TV... Just got off the phone with Customer Support and they told me that at the moment Lion does not work with Philips TVs and that they have escalated to the engineers looking for a solution. This will of course, be fixed in the next software update but no idea of when will it happen!

So, at the moment, Philips and Lion customers are in the dark... :-/

Gustambro - Did you try my solution just a few posts above yours?

My solution worked with a Phillips TV.

Garenda - Glad it worked for you

The software is demo, but i think(i haven't passed the 10 days yet, so just theory here) that if you just set up the display correctly once, it will continue to work even when the software expires, i don't see the software running in the background so i believe it just makes some OS X configuration changes/additions. If you don't need to make any changes afterwards, you don't need to start the program again.

Hopefully apple will have released an update by the time you need to make changes again.

Oh almost forgot to answer your second question, yes you need to have the mac connected to the affected TV, otherwise you won't see the correct display when you start the software to make the configuration change, but just setup up the screen sharing as i described, single user mode should display correctly on your TV, if not try resetting the PRAM by powering on the mac while holding down alt-cmd-p-r until you hear the startup sound twice, then try booting into single user mode, if you still can't see anything.......i would type the three case sensative commands blinded....just give it 1-2 mins to make sure that it's completely booted into single user mode.

I tried but had no luck. I dont have another screen, so I tried with a Single user mode and typed the commands. But could not connect to it via a vnc client. On a windows laptop I tried using TightVNC but could not connect to the Mac. I found the IP address via the DHCP list but the connection would just not go through!

Perhaps I am doing something wrong?

Gustambro - Hmm i guess if the Mac is trying to run it's first time setup screen sharing doesn't work, since no user has been created etc....you actually need the mac username and password when logging into it via VNC.

I did the first time setup using a DVI monitor, did the rest as described above, single user mode and all.

If you haven't already done the first time setup you'll prob. need to borrow a DVI monitor and complete it to make screen sharing work.

Took the "easy step" -> erased the drive and re-installed Snow Leopard with the original Mac Mini disks.  Back to good as new.  Working as my media server just fine again.

May try Lion again once this HDMI issue resolved

Well, so far, I am still getting my video when I boot.

I have not done anything else since the items I had

previously posted.  I just adhere to my start up

    sequence.

I have seen an occasional oddity though.  Sometimes

when I start up I get and "active" black screen instead

of the typical Apple spinning wheel screen.  It then

displays the desktop as usual.  When I say "active"

black screen, I mean that the monitor is receiving video

(the monitor doesn't have no signal message), it's just

an all black screen.   Not sure what that means, if anything.

At any rate, I am enjoying all my movies on iTunes, PLEX,

Netflix, and DVD's.  Still have the nagging audio issue that

    they finally fixed for 10.6.8.

Haven't tried booting my bootcamp partition so I can watch

BluRays for fear video may get hosed yet again.

The clock is still ticking for a proper fix Apple.  Tic-toc, Tic-toc.

Same problem with my 2010 Mac mini. I tried the option command p r truck and it worked but when I changed the resolution to 720 from 1080 I got the same problem. "unsupported video format"

Don't Panic! I did a little when it wouldn't reboot after Lion and I did force restarts twice and then no picture so I unplugged HDMI and restarted and waited for a minute and replugged HDMI and Bingo! Then my Hawking HWDN1A couldn't be detected and I found SL installer and followed those steps remembering to reinstall while adapter is unpugged and Bingo. Now my iTunes won't work but I'll work it out and pray I haven't lost 10,000 songs and movies etc etc etc. Every new OS or update brings some grief, like a new lover, you need to get to know each other and it will get better. How anyone can get so angry as to suggest ending your Apple relationship??? Are you high or just so self absorbed in your entitled gravity that you need to see a manager cause no ones kissing your tookas enough? Apple still the best and the history of Apple shows they worked hard to be the best so be proud of your Apple and take a bite :) 
