Q: How do I tell Lion to disable the LCD screen even when the lid is open?

Hello,

A known issue with MacBook Pro's is that the WiFi reception is poor when running in clamshell mode.    A workaround for this issue when using an external monitor only has been to close the MacBook, wake it with a USB device and monitor attached, and then re-open the lid.

Unfortunately, this doesn't work in OS X Lion.   That's because as soon as you open the lid, Lion re-detects all the displays and re-enables the LCD monitor.  I'm sure in some circumstance, that's very helpful.   But not in mine.

Does anybody know of a way to keep Lion from re-enabling the monitor whenever the lid is opened?

Thanks!

I think it's been established that we would like this option back in some form or other. Enough said.

True, but please post feedback directly to Apple too: http://www.apple.com/feedback/

    Thanks!

Yes, I think most of us do agree that we would like the option back, or some other solution that achieves the same effect.

What seems to be not agreed upon is that there are actual problems for which the original solution was required.  Several of us are attempting to generate data to demonstrate to Apple that a solution is a need rather than a want.

    Here's the feedback I left:

PLEASE add a "control" or "switch" so when a user has an external monitor connected/turned on/active, it will allow the user to leave the MBP's display OPEN but TURNED OFF (not just turning down the display light, but OFF, [forgot this part: so it is not using additional GPU resources], so it can help heat escape, so is not losing wireless sensitivity, so it can easily be turned back on when the user does want to use it, and maybe even so that keyboard and trackpad are still functional, if that's possible).

I'm sure that someday I'll be forced to "upgrade" to Lion, but until that time, I sincerely hope that you come out with at least one more revision of Snow Leopard, and that it includes this feature.

    Thank you!

Just adding to the list of people who wants this "feature" back in Lion.  I already submitted feedback, but want to add my name to this discussion as well.

Can someone help me... for the past few days I have been using the magnet work around....Although today I went to put the magnet in its spot and the screen went to sleep although now my external screen doesnt wake up, and when it does it is only for 2 seconds and goes back to sleep. This never happened, anyone have any ideas why it would be happening all of a sudden

How strong is the magnet? Because the switch is basically two very thin strips of metal which may not function properly if the magnet is too strong.

I've repaired a few notebooks with similar problems. Just a possibility.

The thing i can not understand is the magent still put my computer to sleep but normally the external display would just wake up. Now it flash on and then goes back off. I cant understand why its not working now? I hope I didnt break anything by using the magnet. Its not like I can bring it to apple to have them look at it under the warrenty becasue i cant tell them im using the magnet like that

    Hi

I don't think it would affect it if it's a weak magent, because after all it's a magnet in the lid which it uses.

So when you take the magnet away what happens?

Exactly, the magnet im using is so weak I hardly feel it make a connection to the metal its supposed too. So any idea why my external monitor isnt working when the laptop is asleep? I have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. and I am not mirroring the screens, in case that info helps

Ok. So, just be methodical, when you close the lid without the magnet what happens?

This will determine whether it's the switch which is faulty or something else.
