This has happened several times now (the last time was about 5 minutes ago):

I type a very detailed (2 - 3 paragraphs) response to a question. I hit post and actually even see if for a split second, only to be followed by the login screen. I dutifully sign in, but find that my reply was not posted. So I have to retype it all again - very time consuming.

A "save now" or similar feature would really help tremendously - at least I could hit that one or more times so I wouldn't have to start over from the beginning because I don't always remember to go to the file menu to copy.

Yes, please, automatic save needed (as in the old Discussions) not only for when arbitrarily logged out, but when, for some unaccountable reason, one hits one or two mystery keys in the course of writing -- have never discovered exactly which ones are responsible -- and the entire post, links and all, except for several letters, disappears. Not to be recovered with Edit>Undo

At the VMware forums, which uses the same version of Jive, the workaround is to NOT use the built-in editor.  Instead, use another program like TextEdit to compose, then copy & paste into the forums.  It primarily came up when the login times were shortend with the new version of Jive.  Due to complaints, VMware changed the default timeout to something like several hours.  But because of the scheduled reboots of the Akamai servers, which were needed to fix other issues that the longer timeouts exasperated, you'd still get kicked out if you were composing when the reboot happened.    One of those "be careful what you wish for" type things.

Another common thing that happens to me is when I accidentally swipe or hit the key combo to go back a page, thus losing the unsaved post.  So these reasons are why I use an external editor for all except the shorter replies.

What is that, please? Is that a specific broswer or OS X key combo? Maybe that's my mystery key combination.

You mean Command and left arrow??

Also cmd-[.  (Command & left square bracket.)  cmd-] is forward.

Nope. Thanks for trying, but I'm not anywhere near those when it happens. And neither of those wipes out the page. The mystery endures.

There is an autosave feature in the forum software.  It may sometime work.

If your partial post has been autosaved, it will show up in the advanced editor.  Try switching to the advanced editor & see what you find.

I'd edit in a text editor, but I like to include pictures which would be hard work in a text editor.

I use a copy tracking program …  clipper 1.1.  It a running list of all items that have appeared on my clipboard.  This way I can go back & get an old clipboard item.  So, it's just command + a then command + c for me to make a backup copy.  It's one of the best programs that I have installed!

Clipper works with 10.6? I see a release date of 12/05. And doesn't seem to download, "Internal server error." I have a feeling it's toast.

That sounded good, so i checked it as well - unfortunately, the now "dirty" word 'PPC' is in the description so it won't work with Lion.... and that is the partition I'm using mostly right now. I do have an up-to-date fully bootable SL partition, but I'm not about to boot into that just to post here. I may try the advanced editor; but I just don't appreciate having to go through another page load to post so I usually don't - using these forums has become difficult and frustrating enough.

I just compose the text in the external editor.  After I paste it in to the forums, then I add the pics.  Obvious not the best, but I just got tired of fighting with the forum editor, particularly since I deal with this same Jive software issue on two different forums and longer, since the other forum upgraded their version of Jive before ASC.

Lion, eh? What do you think of it?

Weeeellll,,,,, let's just say that aside from the things that cause extreme "annoyedness" (Resume, Versions, Autosave, MobileBackups/Snapshots), I do like the new look of Mail. And I have turned off everything that can be turned off or tweaked - it still exhibits some really strange behavior. Other than that, not much change since I've decided to ignore most of the "features". It does seem to be a bit more responsive; that may be the 64 bit vs. the 32 bit and that may also be the reason for this: it is a memory hog; 2 GB is only good enough for say, Text Edit and maybe one other thing - if you want to actually do something, 4 GB would be the minimum and 8 GB would be good for iLife stuff. I've got 12 GB, so I don't have a problem, but kernel_task consumes close to 1 GB and Safari appears to eat RAM for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and uses it all after a while - I don't use Safari, but I've seen enought reports about it. And then there is the mysteriously disappearing hard drive space - I don't have that problem either because I don't use Time Machine and have MobileBackups/Snapshots turned off. Those features backup everything if TM is not attached and keep doing it until you hook it up. The ~/Library is now hidden - surprisingly, the System Library is still visible - go figure. In any case, you can resurrect it with a Terminal command and it'll stay visible. And then there is Rosetta - or, rather, it isn't there any more. So, no PPC apps. And my favorite iMovie version - iMovie HD 6.04 (old, but heaps better than whatever came later) is no longer supported I just learned; I'm currently trying to work with it - it keeps crashing, but still working when it's not.....

So, I've not made a final decision; I've partitioned my hard drive and have both SL and Lion. Will give it a bit more of a chance to hopefully get more options to control the truly annoying things (options are a good thing!) and whatever bugs out, but I'm absolutely keeping my SL partition updated.

Thanks for the report. Sounds like, except for the new Mail, you'd like to turn off or ignore everything that isn't SL. What about the full screen business? I would find that very annoying.

What about the full screen business? I would find that very annoying.

So did I when I tried it once - I'm sure it's great on a smallish laptop - it simply does not work for me on a 27" monitor and the icons in Launchpad are about 2" large - tacky at best. Fortunately neither is mandatory - I ignore Launchpad and still use the dock and so far, not one app has opened in full screen mode by default, so that is being ignored as well. Basically, what I've got is a 27" iMac that would be trying to emulate an iOS device if I didn't ignore/turn off some of the features.  If I have an option, I don't mind it at all.

But, I also feel that one needs to be able to control Resume because it could potentially be a serious privacy/security issue. How about visiting one client and having their private/financial info and SSN on a page. Visiting the next client, you open up Numbers/Pages/whatever and guess what - the last page(s) open up for anyone to see (anything you've worked on). Having every tab of FF open up at bootup is just mildly annoying since I prefer to start with a clean slate, but the other scenario scares me.
