But why on earth are the mails itself not shown? Just People and Subjects. I want Mail to show the results from anywhere in the mail (to, from, subject, content). Why is the content not listed? Most of the times I just remember specific words from the mail itself (not knowing or caring who sent it). I can search through the messages AFTER selecting a sender (second step), but: 1) I just don't accept this tedious workaround every single time, Apple *improved* mail, well NOT FOR ME and 2) I often don't know anymore who sent the mail, but searching for specific words.
Found another workaround, using Spotlight itself instead of the Mail-program which is in front of me.
Worked perfectly well in SL.

Thanks s11g for hints on seeing hidden folders. I noticed that the Library folder in my home directory became invisible in Lion. Do you know how to change it to visible while leaving the others hidden?

This Re-indexing HD has work fine for me. (very sad about this simple situation in Lion).
2. Re-indexing HD
Go to System Preferences, Spotlight, click on the Privacy tab, click on the + to add the entire Macintosh HD to the list of "Prevent spotlight from searching these locations" and then remove the Macintosh HD by clicking the - button.
Once you've done this is will automatically start re-indexing in spotlight. This took about 90 minutes on my computer, but once it was done, I re-opened mail and it was working properly again.
Thank you to thehillisrockin

The only thing I could search in maill was subject no matter what I did. Re-indexing fixed it I added Macintosh HD to the prevent list and the second I removed it I tried a search even though it had not finished. I was able to get Sender and Subject once I picked Sender From would appear and I could change to To
Thanks for the re-indexing idea.
