Q: iTunes movie purchases will not play on external display - HDCP auth error

Hello,

Well, I'm surprised there hasn't been more of a storm over this one already but I expect there will be.

Just got a new MacBook last week and finally found a mini Display Port -> VGA adapter so i could use my 19" external display. I rented a movie from the iTunes store yesterday and when I tried to play it on my external display, it gave me a warning/error that the display was 'not an authorized HDCP display' and it would not play. Plays fine on the small MacBook screen, just nothing external. To make it even worse, i tried all the movies that I have purchased from the iTunes store with the same result... NONE of them will play on anything but the MacBook's small 13" screen. This is crazy unacceptable.

Has anyone else run into this yet or have any ideas of something I may be overlooking in order to get purchased movies to play on an external display?

Thanks!

When the computer you buy doesn't provide an integrated display (e.g. my Mac Mini) and I'm attaching it to a reasonably current monitor, I expect (a) it to work, (b) Apple smart enough to tell me in advance that it won't work - not hard to do as I can envision a few methods, or (c) at a minimum provide a warning on the buy page/button that states if you are using an external display, the video may not play. This is uncharacteristic of a company that prides itself in satisfying customers with stuff that "just works".

This is because Apple is being forced to implement Hi Def Copy Protection HDCP, and any external source that doesn't support it (19" monitors or even Apple's expensive 30" Flat Panel) will not be able to play the content.

The fix is simple: Don't buy videos from iTunes. If they aren't going to let you play the content that you purchased on the device that you want to, go with another source and let iTunes rot. That's my plan.

    How is it "similar"?

HDCP error when viewing on your MacBook Pro monitor or an external monitor?

Okay I am NEW to Mac and I love it and I have been checking out the Apple TV for our set and that would include purchased movies I would have thought? So if I connect one to our big set, buy a movie, then I can't watch it only on my computer?? Color me confused! Please let me know Thanks! Peace

I am shocked at this latest development. From now on, I shall only seek to use pirate movies to counter this anti-consumer activity. I will not pay money into a system that treats the consumer as a criminal, by rote.  If you want to counter piracy, reduce the cost of media to the point where consumers prefer lagitimate media over pirated materials. Gee, I only wanted to watch my movie via the projector....

I am having the same problem.. however not only will the HD version not play on my external monitor (60" TV.. I'm obviously not going to watch it in SD).. it won't even play on my MacBook Pro's OWN DISPLAY! So I honestly have no way of watching this.

Definitely the last time I actually try to download and pay for something in the 'legitimate' way.. what a waste of $10 for a movie I can't even watch. Apple, you blew it BIG on this one

    Same here.

Mac mini (Sandy Bridge) > iTunes HD Movies > Apple Cinema Display 20" > HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)

same thing is happening here - itunes HD tv show (doctor who) > samsung LCD tv through thunderbolt (mini display port) > HDCP error from iTunes on my MBP.

i was able to play these HD movies/ tv shows as recently as last month. is this a problem with iTunes update 10.4.1 (10) ?

is apple forcing me to buy an apple tv?

Thank for your advice everyone. I was about to purchase a movie today from Itunes but after reading the coments, I think I will ditch apple iTunes altogether and get Blue ray discs from amazon. It works out cheaper by the way.

Apple is just money hungry... Soon they will be like Microsoft

Hey same thing happened here! But i remember that I've been able to play iTunes movie on my external monitor before! what's going on? Is that the new iTunes? Why shouldn't I be able to play a movie I AM PAYING FOR on whatever monitor I want? That's ridiculous!!!

Has anybody from Apple ever responded to this thread? It's been going a while. If not then The silence suggests it isn't maybe in their comfort zone. Or is it complacency? Look how many views for the issue. I'd be surprised if the majority of these visitors didn't decide to shop elsewhere after reading our complaints. Maybe just a drop in the ocean for Apple though.

    No and they won't.
