Q: How do I force a Mac Pro Lion RAID 5 rebuild after replacing a failed drive?

I have a Mac Pro with a Hardware RAID card with 4 identical drives attached.

1 drive failed. I replaced it with an identical drive. It has never rebuilt the array with the new drive.

How can I force the rebuild so I'm protected and the array is operating at full speed?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), Hardware RAID card set to RAID 5

    Michael,

You should probably repost in the correct forum, this is an iMac forum.

Thanks. Not sure how I mucked that up. Thought I had clicked Mac Pro to begin with.

Is there a way to delete this thread now that I've reposted?

    Not a big deal.

No but I can ask a moderator to move it, I can't guarantee it will be done though.

I've already reposted it in the Mac Pro area, thanks.

Finally discovered the elusive answer on my own.

First one has to select the newly added drive and use the RAID Utility to Make (that new drive) Spare.

As soon as that's done successfully, the system recognizes the Spare and Assigns it to the RAID Array.

Then, it automatically schedules a Task to begin the Rebuild.

    Problem solved.

    Hi, Michael:

I had the same RAID setup as yours and encountering the same problem.  However I had difficulty trying first to rebuild the RAID as you suggested here by making the new drive Spare.  After that nothing happened.  I was still able to read data from my other two drives (they were shown as "Assigned").

I also tried to delete the RAID set itself so I can rebuld it from scratch.  The RAID set was still there even I clicked on delete and data at least still remain intact.  So I am stuck now.

I posted in this Forum for help couple times but I am not getting any feedback.  I appreciate if you can share with me in more detail how you make the rebuild work.  Thank in advance.

    Hello fwlun,

did you solve the problem? I am having exactly the same issue.

Mac Pro (2011) with hardware raid and four drives in raid 5 raidset (named RS1). Raid controller lost connection to drive in bay 3 but could reconnect after a couple of minutes. Turned Mac Pro off, removed and re-inserted drive. After start-up it shows in Raid Utitility with all green status. Making the drive a spare drive via Raid Utility disconnects it for half a minuten, then it shows up again. No rebuild of raidset starting.

    Raidutil output as follows:

    raidutil list raidsetinfo

                                         Total     Avail

Raidsets      Type       Drives       Size      Size  Comments

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------

    RS1           RAID 5     1,2,4      5.23TB    0.00MB  No tasks running

    raidutil list driveinfo

    Drives  Raidset       Size      Flags

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

    Bay #1  RS1             2.00TB   IsMemberOfRAIDSet:RS1 IsReliable

    Bay #2  RS1             2.00TB   IsMemberOfRAIDSet:RS1 IsReliable

    Bay #3  <none>          2.00TB   IsReliable IsNotAssigned

    Bay #4  RS1             2.00TB   IsMemberOfRAIDSet:RS1 IsReliable

    Hi, Marc:

My case is not the same as yours as you mentioned that all four with green lights on for a little but then it would not rebuild.

My suggestion is to first check if you have the four drives in the original order as it was first setup.  That is Drive 1 in Bay 1 (closest to the front), Drive 2 in Bay 2,...etc.  Also on the drive mount, if you look carefully, they have #1,...,#4 labeled on each mount respectively.  If you have not removed the drives from the mount at all, you could then follow that sequence and put all your drives back.

That was what I did to solve my problem.  As I said my case may be different than yours.  But it doesn't hurt to make sure all drives are in the same bay as it was when you set up the RAID set.

Another thing if that helped is the configuration which you may be different than mine and if so my case may not apply to yours.  Here is my config:

    1)  Apple RAID card firware version E-1.3.2.0

    2)  Hardware Revision  2.00

    3)  Driver Version 209

    4)  Expansion ROM Version 0018

    5)  Mac OS X 10.7.4

    6)  Mac Pro Mode:  4,1

I hope above helped.  Beyond that I am sorry that I am not that technical to understand what is going on.  I just by accident tried something that solved my issue.
