Q: can you run the computer without the monitor

Can I remove the display and connect a monitor via the VGA output? My display is unusable and I would like it removed.

PowerBook G4, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

I'd be concerned that, in disconnecting the display cabling, the "dead ends" of that many electrical paths would make the computer unusable. The safest action is to leave the display in place and go with an external monitor.

What PowerBook to you have? Most that can run OS 10.5.8 have a DVI out and you need an adaptor like this:

Apple DVI to VGA Display Adapter

to drive a VGA monitor. That's the one I use on my 17-inch PowerBook when it's on an external display

Thanks for your reply Alan.  I have a Powerbook G4 5.7 17".  I do have the VGA cables.  I want to remove the laptop display so it is not distracting and you would have a clear view of the desktop monitor when you are working.  I have never removed the monitor before so I am unaware of the "dead ends" you refer to.

It is not a question of electrostatic shock more of an internal signal direction that you are concerned about, right?  It is very difficult geting an answer from anyone who has done this.  If it was SOP then there would be many contributions about it.  Thanks for your help.

The computer will run without its display, but since the display assembly contains the Airport and Bluetooth antennas, you won't have the use of either of those systems.
