Q: Profile Manager and Wiki Problems

Hi Guys,

I have tried a clean install twice and have had multiple issues with missing files that the system can't create, permissions out and all sorts of bugs.  I successfully have the server up and running, but have continued issues with the Profile manager and potentially linked, the Wiki server.

I get the standard 'Error reading configuration' when I select both the Wiki and Profile Manager.

Here is the log from when I click on Profile Manager:

Does anyone have any ideas on where to start trouble shooting this?

I have seen some of the other posts about this and have configured my settings accordingly:

Well, for whatever it's worth, after the fix I posted above mine has been stable ever since, including through two reboots.

I also had some strange problems with Lion Server.

my Podcast Producer was producing a lot of errors, also i got a read error when i tried to start the profile server.

all was fixed, when i started all the scripts manually in the following directory:

    /System/Library/ServerSetup/CommonExtras

    and

    /System/Library/ServerSetup/CommonExtras/PostgreSQLExtras

    good luck to you all.

I have had success recovering services a few times. I don't know exactly what the one item that works each time, but here is my typical recovery steps:

    1. Set all certificates to None using Server.app (wait till it completes).

    2. Repair disk permissions.

    3. Restore /var/pgsql from the last known working instance.

    4. Restart 2-5 times, by this time pgsql should be starting on its own again, and your services should have recovered themselves.

    5. Make sure DNS service is running with Server Admin.app, seems to be required for mail and wiki to startup.

    6. Choose the correct certificates for each service again.

    7. Reduce mail security required for incoming SMTP connections to allow incoming mail with Server Admin.app.

My issues are all typically spawned from pgsql not booting, or rather claiming to get a shutdown request immediately after starting up. Once I have it running it stays running until I reboot or install updates again. Its been up for over 20 days now.

Good luck! I really hope that Apple fixes all these issues in the next update... it would be nice to be able to reboot it whenever and have reliable services. I still have yet to get the profile manager and podcast manager running. They seem to be the cause of some failures when I first tried them out.

I had these issues and i investigated a bit the system logs.

Actually, i found a number of different problems.

    1) Postsgres do not start up; if you ask to systemadmin it will tell you it is up, but it is not.

It actually stop after trying to create a log file in /Library/Logs/.

If you get an error trying to run the above magic scripts you are probably in this situation.

Personally i fixed it with a bold change in the writing permission in the above directory; probably

not a good idea, and it may be changed by repairing the disk permission.

    2) At this point, using system admin restart the data base; it is now running.

    3) You can run the above scripts; they will create the collaboration oriented data bases.

This first three point fixed the Wiki; it is now running and i do not get the error reading settings message anymore.

    4) But, the profile manager was still giving the error reading settings message; i found an error message in the logs: the profile manager complain that it cannot write a log file in /var/logs/devicemanger (or something like that, check the error in the system log), because the directory do not exists; i manually created the directory,

and now the settings page for the Profile Manager works (i haven't tried to actually run the application).

Now if i could get the web server to work :-< ...

I have also had the 'Error reading settings' problem in Profile Manager, despite trying everything in the discussions and clean reinstalls (which work for a little while only).

It seems that various different fixes work for some people but not others; and the underlying cause of the problem has not been resolved.

There are now numerous threads on this problem (there are yet others with similar problems):

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3212304

I have posted this in each to try and pull things together a bit.

Does anyone know if Apple has acknowledged the issue and offered an official response?

My problem was Log folders and that is why it was not able to write log files and start PostgreSQL. I actually did not have any problems until I decided to delete all my logs so I have only new logs Well this crashed my server and I had to manually create 2 log files which were specified in the console message. After that It all worked. The funny thing is Time machine did not backup any LOG files!?!? That is strange but it has to do something with permissions. I will figure this one out for sure because I need my time machine backup to be right. Oh and before anybody things I did someting to the permissions myself- the andwer is no, this is after clean install.

    Solved! At least for me...

I have described all solutions to the major problems I've been having from a crippled 10.7.3 install to a flourishing one here:https://discussions.apple.com/message/17740033#17740033

    Hope this helps!
